Temple of Apollo in Side
Temple of Apollo in Side by the old harbor, Side, Turkey
The Temple of Apollo in Side is located on the seafront, at the entrance to the old harbor, in the historic center of the city of Side. The ruins are part of the archaeological zone of the ancient city and stand next to the remains of the Temple of Athena. Thanks to its open location by the water, it is one of the most prominent ancient sites in the city.
The complex belongs to the Roman period and is usually dated to the 2nd century AD. Originally, there were two temples here, forming a single sanctuary space. Parts of the podium, foundations, architectural blocks, and a restored fragment of the colonnade of the Temple of Apollo have survived to the present day, making it easier to imagine the original scale of the structure.
A popular legend about the meeting of Cleopatra and Mark Antony is associated with the temple, but there is no reliable historical evidence for this story. The destruction of the complex is explained by a combination of natural factors, earthquakes, and the reuse of stone in later periods, which was a common phenomenon for ancient buildings in the region.
For tourists, this place is interesting not only because of its ancient history, but also because of the opportunity to see the ruins in a natural urban setting, by the sea, against the backdrop of fortress walls, the harbor, and other monuments of Side. A visit to the temple is usually combined with a walk through the old town and the archaeological zone.

Temple of Apollo in Side: ruins by the sea and the old harbor
The temple ruins stand by the water and are part of the city's ancient zone.
Ancient columns by the sea and sanctuary ruins at the old harbor
At the site, you can see six restored columns of the Temple of Apollo, about 8.9 meters high, fragments of the entablature, stone foundation blocks, and the remains of the neighboring Temple of Athena. The ruins are best appreciated from different viewpoints: from the waterfront, from the harbor side, and from the area inside the archaeological zone, where the layout of the complex is clearly visible.
A visit usually does not take much time, but the site is convenient for a leisurely walk and getting acquainted with ancient Side outside the museum setting. People often stop here to look closely at the masonry details, columns, and shoreline, as well as to take photographs, especially during the hours of soft evening light, when the ruins stand out clearly against the sea.
Nearby are the ancient theater of Side, the agora, the city walls, and the Side Archaeological Museum, so the temple can easily be included in a general route through the historic center. The ruins are usually reached on foot from the center of Side along the streets of the old town toward the harbor.
