The Three Beauties Rock Pillars
The Three Beauties Rock Pillars in Urgup, Turkey
The «Three Beauties» rock pillars are located at the entrance to Urgup, in the central part of Cappadocia. This is one of the region’s most famous rock formations, often recognized by three freestanding stone pillars with distinctive “caps” of harder rock.
The formation of these rocks is linked to the geological history of Cappadocia. After volcanic activity, the area was covered with layers of tuff and other rocks, and then wind, precipitation, and temperature changes gradually eroded the soft base. The denser upper layers weathered more slowly, which is how the tall pillars formed, known in the region as “fairy chimneys.”
A local legend is associated with the «Three Beauties», but the rocks themselves are of natural origin. Today, this is more of a convenient viewpoint and one of the recognizable symbols of the surroundings of Urgup, where visitors come to see the characteristic landscape of Cappadocia in a compact and easily accessible location.
The location is interesting because it allows visitors to get acquainted with the typical relief of the region without a long route and to examine the shape of the tuff pillars up close. Most often, people come here for a short stop, a walk around the viewpoint, and photos against the backdrop of the rock formations.

Three tuff pillars with stone “caps” by the road in Urgup
At the site by the rocks, you can clearly see the structure of these formations: the narrow light-colored bases are made of soft tuff, while darker and harder stone blocks rest on top, protecting the pillars from rapid erosion. Because of this, the contrast between the rock layers, characteristic of Cappadocia’s landscapes, is especially noticeable.
People usually come here for a short stop on the way between Urgup, the Goreme Open-Air Museum, and the valleys of the region. From the site, it is convenient to photograph the pillars themselves and the surrounding slopes, and under different lighting the shades of tuff and the surface relief are clearly visible. No long hiking route is required here, so the place is also suitable for a brief visit.
Nearby are the center of Urgup, viewpoints of Cappadocia, and several popular valleys that are often included in one trip around the region. The easiest way to get here is by car or as part of a tour from Urgup; the journey takes just a few minutes from the town center.
