Zeynel Bey Mausoleum

Zeynel Bey Mausoleum

Zeynel Bey Mausoleum in Batman, Turkey

The Zeynel Bey Mausoleum is located near the new Hasankeyf in Batman Province, in southeastern Turkey. It is a 15th-century funerary monument associated with the Aq Qoyunlu state and the name of Zeynel Bey, son of Uzun Hasan. For travelers, it is of interest as a rare example of the region’s late medieval memorial architecture.

The structure is easy to recognize by its cylindrical form and colored tile cladding. Blue and turquoise patterns have been preserved on the facade, making the mausoleum stand out among other historical monuments in Turkey. Its architectural appearance is associated with Turkic-Persian and Central Asian traditions, so the building differs noticeably from the more familiar Anatolian tombs.

Originally, the mausoleum stood in old Hasankeyf, in an area with a very long history of settlement. In connection with the construction of the Ilisu Dam and the flooding of part of the valley, the monument was moved to a new location, with efforts made to preserve its structure and appearance. Today, it is open to visitors on a specially prepared site next to modern Hasankeyf.

A visit to the mausoleum is usually combined with a walk around the surroundings of Hasankeyf, where the fortress, rock-cut chambers, and other monuments have been preserved. The site is well suited to those interested in the history of Eastern Anatolia, Islamic architecture, and the changes this ancient city has undergone in recent decades.

The main feature of the mausoleum is its exterior finish of glazed tiles with geometric and ornamental motifs in blue and turquoise tones. Even after being relocated, the monument retains its striking silhouette, and from close range you can observe the proportions of the cylindrical body and the decorative bands characteristic of mausoleum architecture of that time.

The area around the monument makes it easy to view it from all sides and photograph the details of the facade in daylight. The interior space is usually perceived primarily as part of a historical memorial, so visitors focus mainly on the exterior appearance, the finishing technique, and the very fact of the careful relocation of the structure from its original site.

Nearby are Hasankeyf Fortress, viewpoints over the Tigris Valley, and other monuments from the old city that were either relocated or preserved, so the trip can easily be combined with exploring the entire historical area. The mausoleum is usually reached from the city of Batman by car or bus toward Hasankeyf.
