Main sights in the Historic Centre of Samarkand

The main places to visit in the Historic Centre of Samarkand are Registan, Bibi-Khanym Mosque, Shah-i-Zinda, Gur-e-Amir Mausoleum, and Siab Bazaar. Registan is the district's best-known site, made up of three monumental madrasas facing a large square. Shah-i-Zinda is a major necropolis of tiled mausoleums and one of the most important pilgrimage and visitor sites in Samarkand. Gur-e-Amir is the tomb associated with Timur, while Bibi-Khanym Mosque is one of the city's signature historic monuments. Siab Bazaar adds one of the main everyday trading areas near the monuments and is also one of the district's most practical stops.

The layout makes it possible to walk between several major sights, though taxis are sometimes used to link the full set of places to visit. The area is defined by blue domes, large portal facades, and dense geometric tile decoration. It is busiest around Registan and Shah-i-Zinda during the main daytime visiting hours. The overall atmosphere is historic and monumental, with a strong focus on daytime sightseeing and photography.

Beyond the main monuments, visitors spend time in restaurants, tea houses, and among souvenir sellers along the principal tourist routes. Siab Bazaar is one of the main places to see everyday local trade. The district is also well suited to architecture viewing, photography, and general daytime exploration. Evening activity is limited, with less nightlife than in other parts of the city.
