Chorsu Trading Dome

Chorsu Trading Dome in Samarkand, Uzbekistan

The Chorsu Trading Dome is located in the historic center of Samarkand, near Registan Square. It is one of the few surviving commercial structures of the old city, recalling the time when the central streets of Samarkand were connected with markets, craft rows, and business life.

The word "chorsu" is translated as "crossroads." In the cities of Central Asia, this was the name given to covered markets and trading buildings located at the intersection of important roads. Samarkand's Chorsu is a multi-sided domed structure with a large central dome and smaller volumes on the sides, characteristic of the urban architecture of its time.

The building is dated to the 15th century. Initially, it served as a place for trade and making deals, and later it came to be used more specifically as a hat market. This change clearly shows how urban trade evolved, while the structure itself retained its importance in the everyday life of Samarkand.

After restoration in the early 21st century, the Chorsu dome has been used as an exhibition space. For tourists, this place is interesting not only as an architectural monument, but also as a convenient point for walking through the historic center, close to Registan and other famous landmarks of Samarkand.

Historic domed market near Registan Square

Today, art exhibitions and temporary displays are usually held inside Chorsu. Visitors can explore the interior of the old trading dome, pay attention to its proportions, the construction of its vaults, and how the building has been adapted for modern use without losing its historic appearance.

From the outside, the multi-sided shape of the building and the large central dome are especially noticeable, making Chorsu easy to distinguish from the surrounding development. It is not a large museum complex, but a compact historic site that can easily be included in a route around old Samarkand without requiring a separate long trip.

Nearby are Registan Square, the Ulugh Beg Madrasah, the Sher-Dor Madrasah, the Tillya-Kari Madrasah, and the Mausoleum of the Shaybanids, so a visit to Chorsu is often combined with a walk to the main landmarks in the city center.

The easiest way to get here is by taxi or on foot from Registan if you are already in the historic center of Samarkand.
