Ancient Bergama

Ancient Bergama in Izmir, Turkey

Ancient Bergama is located in the Turkish city of Bergama, north of Izmir. In antiquity, this was Pergamon - one of the important centers of the Hellenistic era, and later a major city of the Roman Empire. Today, the archaeological area occupies several sites around the modern city, so a visit here offers the chance to see not just one monument, but an entire historical landscape.

The most famous part of ancient Pergamon is located on the acropolis, which rises above the valley. Here, the remains of temples, terraces, fortifications, residential and public buildings, as well as an ancient theater built into the steep slope, have been preserved. The history of the famous Pergamon Library, considered one of the largest in the Greek world, is also connected with this city.

Special attention should be given to the Asclepion - a large healing and religious complex dedicated to Asclepius, the god of medicine. In addition to the ancient monuments, traces of the Byzantine and Ottoman periods are also visible in Bergama, making a walk through the city more varied. The archaeological landscape of Pergamon is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Bergama is of interest to those who want to see the clearly legible structure of an ancient city outside a museum setting. Here, you can explore the acropolis, sanctuaries, theater, healing center, and fragments of urban development in sequence, and then move on to the modern neighborhoods that stand alongside the ancient ruins. It is usually worth allowing several hours for a full visit.

Ancient Bergama

The hilltop acropolis, ancient theater, and healing center

A visit to ancient Bergama usually begins with the acropolis. At the summit and on the terraces below, the foundations and fragments of buildings make it possible to imagine the layout of the upper city. The theater facing the plain stands out in particular - one of the steepest hillside ancient theaters in Asia Minor. From the viewpoints, it is easy to see how the ancient city was connected to the surrounding landscape.

The Asclepion is located separately from the acropolis and provides insight into the medical culture of the ancient world. On its grounds, elements of the sacred road, inner courtyard, rooms for treatment and rituals, as well as a theater structure, have been preserved. This complex is especially interesting because it combined religious practices, medical methods, and architecture of the Roman period.

During the trip, it is worth keeping in mind that the monuments are located not in one place, but across several sites within Bergama. For this reason, it is more convenient to plan your route in advance and allow time not only for the ruins, but also for the museum or a walk through the city's old quarters. Nearby, you can also see the Red Basilica - a large Roman temple complex later used during the Byzantine period.

Bergama is usually reached from Izmir by car or intercity bus, after which visitors travel between the main excavation areas by local transport or taxi. For the visit, it is best to choose comfortable footwear, as part of the route runs along slopes, stone paths, and open areas without shade.
