Ancient City of Klazomenai
Ancient City of Klazomenai in Izmir, Turkey
The ancient city of Klazomenai is located in the Urla district west of central Izmir, on the coast of the Aegean Sea. In antiquity, it was one of the Ionian cities of western Anatolia, connected with maritime trade and craft production. Today, the site is known primarily as an archaeological area where traces of urban life from different periods can be seen.
Originally, the settlement was located on the mainland, and later part of the city developed on a nearby island, which is now connected to the land. During excavations, residential quarters, sections of fortifications, production areas, and a necropolis were discovered here. These finds help to imagine the structure of an ancient coastal city and its economic life.
Klazomenai is of particular importance because of the discovery of an ancient olive oil production complex, considered one of the earliest known examples of its kind in the Greek world. Archaeologists also found terracotta sarcophagi and other funerary monuments. For tourists, the site is interesting not because of the scale of its ruins, but because of the opportunity to see an important archaeological site connected with the history of Ionia and the everyday life of the ancient population.

The site offers a chance to see the layout of an ancient coastal city and traces of its crafts.
Excavations and the Earliest Olive Oil Production
At Klazomenai, visitors usually encounter not a reconstructed ancient city, but an archaeological zone where the layout and the discovered objects are what matter most. Remains of residential and economic areas, fragments of defensive structures, and a necropolis have been identified here. The site is best appreciated as a place for a calm visit with an interest in history and archaeology.
The main feature of Klazomenai is the finds related to olive processing and oil production. They made the site notable in studies of the ancient economy, as they help explain how craft production, storage of goods, and everyday labor were organized in Ionia. Funerary finds, including terracotta sarcophagi, add to the picture of the life and rituals of the city's inhabitants.
A trip here can easily be combined with a walk around Urla and the coast, where there are other historical points and sea views. The Urla district is usually reached from Izmir by car or bus, after which the route to the archaeological zone is clarified on site, as the format of the visit may depend on current research and access conditions.
