Ancient City of Aizanoi
Ancient City of Aizanoi in Kutahya, Turkey
The ancient city of Aizanoi is located in Kutahya Province in western Turkey, near the town of Cavdarhisar. It is one of the notable archaeological sites of the region, connected with the history of Phrygia and especially well preserved in terms of traces from the Roman period. The city's territory gives an idea of what a major ancient center with public buildings, streets, and engineering structures looked like.
The main monument of Aizanoi is the Temple of Zeus, which is considered one of the best-preserved ancient temples in Anatolia. No less remarkable is the complex of the theater and stadium, located next to each other - such a combination is rare. During a walk around the site, you can also see the remains of baths, colonnaded streets, market and utility buildings, as well as ancient bridges over the Penkalas River.
Aizanoi is especially interesting because not only an individual monumental structure has been preserved here, but also the layout of an entire city. The ruins make it easier to understand how public spaces were arranged, where spectacles, trade, and everyday life took place. This place is suitable for those who want to see ancient heritage outside the major tourist routes and calmly explore an open-air archaeological complex.

The Temple of Zeus, stadium, and theater in one archaeological complex
When visiting Aizanoi, people usually begin with the Temple of Zeus, which stands on an elevation. Here, the proportions of the ancient building, the preserved columns, and elements of the podium are clearly visible. The site offers views of other parts of the complex, which helps to better imagine the layout of the ancient city.
You can then walk to the Roman-era theater and stadium, which adjoin each other. In addition to them, the site preserves sections of colonnaded streets, remains of baths, торговых помещений and stone bridges over the Penkalas River. A walk through the complex takes time, so comfortable shoes are recommended for uneven stone surfaces and open areas without shade.
Near the archaeological zone is modern Cavdarhisar, and in Kutahya itself you can complement the trip with visits to museums and by exploring the city's historic buildings. Aizanoi is usually reached from Kutahya by car or taxi, as the monument is located outside the city center.
