The ancient city of Kaunos is located near Dalyan in southwestern Turkey, not far from the coast and on the banks of the Dalyan River. The ruins lie on a hillside opposite the famous Lycian rock tombs and are among the best-known archaeological monuments in the area. For tourists, this is a convenient opportunity to see an ancient city in a natural landscape without going far from the resort area of Dalyan.
The history of Kaunos goes back to great antiquity. In different eras, the city was associated with Caria, then came under the influence of the Persian state, the Hellenistic world, Rome, and Byzantium. Kaunos was once a port, but over time the coastline changed, and the harbor gradually silted up, causing the city to lose its former importance as a maritime trading point.
Within the archaeological zone, the ruins of a theater, sections of fortress walls, baths, and temple and civic structures have been preserved. The layout of the city can still be understood, allowing visitors to see how public buildings of the ancient period were arranged. A visit is usually combined with a walk around Dalyan or a trip along the river, so visiting Kaunos is well suited to those interested in the history of the region.
Particular attention is drawn to the rock-cut tombs located high above the river. Their facades are shaped like ancient temple buildings with columns and pediments. These tombs are clearly visible from afar and have become one of the most recognizable sights in the surroundings of Dalyan, although they are most often viewed from a distance.

The archaeological zone of Kaunos is quite large, so it is worth allowing time for a leisurely walk along the hillside. Here you can see the ancient theater with the shape of its seating rows still clearly visible, the remains of the city fortifications, the foundations of public buildings, and sections of old streets. From the elevated points, there are views of the river delta, reed beds, and the surroundings of Dalyan.
The terrain is uneven, with rocky paths and climbs, so closed shoes and a supply of water are more convenient for visiting in warm weather. What matters here is not individual restored objects, but the overall structure of the ancient city and its position in the landscape. This makes Kaunos especially interesting for those who want to see not a museum reconstruction, but authentic archaeological remains in a natural setting.
The rock tombs themselves are best viewed from the opposite side of the river or during a boat trip along Dalyan, since access to them is limited. Near Kaunos, visitors often also go to the riverfront of Dalyan, take boat routes through the delta, and visit Iztuzu Beach, known for its long sandbar. The ruins are usually reached from the center of Dalyan either on foot by crossing the river by boat or by road by car, followed by a short climb to the archaeological zone.
