Ancient City of Nysa

Ancient City of Nysa

Ancient City of Nysa in Aydin, Turkey

The ancient city of Nysa is located in Aydin Province, near Sultanhisar, in the Meander River valley in western Turkey. The ruins lie within a rural landscape and are among the notable ancient monuments of the region. The city was formed during the Hellenistic era and later developed under the Romans, when major public and engineering structures were built here.

Nysa was an important city of Caria and stood on routes connecting the inland regions of Anatolia with the coast. The ancient geographer Strabo mentioned Nysa as a place of learning associated with grammar and rhetoric, which speaks to its role not only as an urban center but also as a cultural one. In sources, the city is also linked with the cult of Dionysus.

Today, within the archaeological complex, visitors can see the theater, bouleuterion, stadium, agora, remains of the library, gymnasium, baths, necropolis, and city fortifications. Particularly well known is the Roman bridge, which spanned the riverbed and was part of the urban layout. For travelers, Nysa is interesting for the opportunity to walk through an extensive ancient site and see how a city of the Hellenistic and Roman periods was organized.

The monument is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List together with neighboring Aphrodisias. A trip here is suitable for those interested in archaeology, the history of Asia Minor, and less crowded ancient ruins in the surroundings of Aydin.

Ancient City of Nysa

Theater, stadium, and Roman bridge in the Meander valley

The territory of Nysa is quite large, so a visit usually takes more time than at smaller archaeological sites. The best-preserved structure is the theater, built into the slope, where the layout of the seating rows and stage can still be clearly understood. The ruins of the bouleuterion, agora, and stadium are also visible, allowing visitors to imagine the layout of the ancient city.

Special attention should be paid to the Roman bridge, which was connected with the building system and covered a section of the riverbed. In Nysa, the remains of the library, gymnasium, baths, and necropolis have also been preserved, although the degree of preservation varies from site to site. For walking around the area, it is more convenient to choose closed shoes and plan your visit during the cooler hours, as a significant part of the route runs under the open sky.

Nysa is suitable for those who want to explore ruins at a მშვიდное pace without dense urban surroundings and focus on the details of ancient architecture. Nearby, the trip can be combined with a visit to Aphrodisias, and it is also possible to stay in Sultanhisar or in the center of Aydin.

It is usually most convenient to get here by car from Aydin or along the road toward Sultanhisar and Nazilli, after which a local access road leads to the excavations.
