Ankara Citadel

Ankara Citadel on the Hill of the Old City, Ankara, Turkey

Ankara Citadel is located in the historic center of Ankara, on a high hill above the old part of the city. The fortress is clearly visible from different districts and remains one of the main landmarks of the capital. Its current appearance took shape over many centuries, which is why traces of different construction periods can be seen in its walls and towers.

The core of the inner ring of fortifications is usually associated with the Byzantine period, while the outer walls were repeatedly rebuilt and reinforced later. During repairs and expansions of the fortress, ancient and Roman stone blocks and architectural details were reused, which is still noticeable in the masonry today. Because of this, the citadel is of interest not only as a defensive structure, but also as a vivid monument to the city’s layered history.

Inside the fortress and at its foot, narrow streets and the traditional buildings of old Ankara have been preserved. Here you can see residential houses, small workshops, shops, and cafes, as well as walk along sections of the walls and viewing platforms. People choose this place not only for its history, but also for the panoramic views of the modern city.

The citadel is well suited to those who want to better understand how Ankara developed from an ancient settlement and medieval fortification into a modern capital. A visit to the fortress can easily be combined with a walk through the old quarters and sightseeing at other historic places in the city center.

Historic walls and a panorama of old Ankara

During a walk through the citadel, visitors usually pass through the gates, climb the cobbled streets, and explore sections of the fortress walls with towers. The inner area of the fortress is built up with old houses, some of which have been restored and are used as small shops, craft workshops, and family-run cafes. The contrast between the old buildings on the hill and the modern neighborhoods below is especially noticeable here.

The viewpoints offer wide views over Ankara, so many people come here for photographs and a general sense of the city’s terrain. While walking along the walls, you can observe differences in the stone masonry and see ancient fragments built into the fortifications. Some surfaces are uneven and the climbs are fairly steep, so it is more convenient to choose sturdy footwear for the walk.

Near the citadel are the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations, the Hamamonu quarter, and the old streets of the Ulus district, which are convenient to explore in one day. This makes the fortress a good starting point for discovering the historic center of Ankara.

You can get here by taxi, city bus, or on foot from the Ulus district if you are prepared for an uphill walk. It can be lively here at different times of day, but in the morning and toward evening, the walk is usually more peaceful.
