Anush-khan Baths

Anush-khan Baths in Khiva, Uzbekistan

The Anush-khan Baths are located in Itchan Kala, the inner city of Khiva, which is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. This is one of the well-preserved monuments of urban infrastructure from the khanate period, recalling how everyday life was organized in medieval Khiva.

According to researchers, the bath complex was built in the 17th century by order of Abulgazi Khan and was given the name of Anush-khan. The structure belongs to the tradition of Eastern hammams: it included spaces for entry, changing, and washing, and the layout itself was designed to retain heat and ensure convenient movement between the halls.

A distinctive feature of the baths is that a significant part of the structure is hidden below ground level. From the outside, visitors primarily notice the domes rising above the surface, while the main rooms are located in the sunken section. This solution helped maintain a more stable temperature inside and made the heating system more efficient.

Today, the Anush-khan Baths are of interest to those who want to see not only the palaces, mosques, and madrasahs of Khiva, but also the less ceremonial, practical structures of the historic city. This monument provides insight into the construction techniques and engineering solutions of Central Asia in the early modern period.

When viewing the building, it is worth paying attention to its external appearance: above ground, mainly the domed roofs are visible, while the main part of the rooms is hidden below. This type of design distinguishes many historic baths in the region and helps explain how architects solved the challenges of heating, ventilation, and heat retention.

The internal arrangement of such hammams was usually based on a gradual transition from cooler rooms to warmer ones. Even if some of the interiors have not been fully preserved, the volume of the building and its structure make it possible to imagine how the bath functioned as a public space where hygienic procedures and the everyday social interactions of townspeople were combined.

The Anush-khan Baths are convenient to visit during a walk through Itchan Kala, in the historic center of Khiva. Nearby are madrasahs, mosques, minarets, and city gates, so a visit to this monument can easily be included in a general route around the old city.

The easiest way to get here is on foot after entering Itchan Kala, since the main sights within the fortress walls are located close to one another. Before visiting, it is useful to check access conditions on site, as visiting arrangements for individual sites in the historic complex may change.
