Muhammad Rahim Khan Madrasa

Muhammad Rahim Khan Madrasa in Khiva, Uzbekistan

The Muhammad Rahim Khan Madrasa is located in Itchan Kala, in the historic center of Khiva, opposite the Kunya-Ark fortress. It is one of the largest educational buildings in the old city, built in 1871 by order of the Khivan ruler Muhammad Rahim Khan II. The khan was known for his interest in science, literature, and art and wrote poetry under the name Feruz.

The building belongs to the late period of Khiva architecture and clearly shows what large madrasas looked like at the end of the 19th century. It has a rectangular layout with an inner courtyard, four iwans, and two-tiered rows of hujras - small rooms where students lived and studied. The main facade stands out with its tall portal and white-blue majolica cladding.

For tourists, this place is interesting not only as a monument of Islamic education, but also as an important part of the urban ensemble of Itchan Kala, included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Here you can see characteristic elements of Khivan architecture, understand the structure of a traditional madrasa, and better imagine the cultural life of the khanate in the final decades of its existence.

The madrasa is convenient to visit during a walk through the old city. It is located near Khiva's main attractions, so it can easily be included in an itinerary through Itchan Kala and helps show how defensive, religious, and educational buildings were combined within a single fortress area.

During your visit, it is worth paying attention to the main portal, the entrance design, and the symmetry of the courtyard space. In the inner courtyard, the traditional madrasa layout is clearly visible: the iwans were used for classes and gatherings, while the hujras were arranged around the perimeter and served as living quarters for students. The decoration here is more restrained than in earlier monuments, which is characteristic of the late architecture of Khiva.

Visitors enjoy examining the majolica, brickwork, and facade proportions, especially when comparing this building with other madrasas in Itchan Kala. The madrasa helps explain how educational function and representational character were combined in Khiva: the building simultaneously served as a place of learning and emphasized the status of the ruler under whom it was built.

Nearby are Kunya-Ark, the Juma Mosque, the Muhammad Amin Khan Madrasa, and the Kalta Minor minaret, so a visit is usually combined with a walk through the central part of Itchan Kala. Thanks to its location in the historic center of Khiva, it is easy to reach on foot from almost any entrance to the old city.
