Alla-Kuli Khan Madrasah
Alla-Kuli Khan Madrasah in Khiva, Uzbekistan
The Alla-Kuli Khan Madrasah is located in the eastern part of Ichan Kala, the historic center of Khiva, near the Palvan-Darvaza Gate. It was built in 1834-1835 by order of Alla-Kuli Khan, one of the rulers of the Khiva Khanate, who was actively involved in developing urban infrastructure and religious education. Today, the building is considered one of the notable monuments of the late period of Khivan architecture.
The complex was built next to the covered market Alla-Kuli Khan Tim and adjoins the earlier Khojamberdybiy Madrasah. Because of the dense development of the old city and the partial use of neighboring land, the layout turned out to be somewhat unusual for traditional Khorezm madrasahs. This makes the structure especially interesting for those who want to see how architecture adapted to the conditions of an already established urban space.
The main facade of the madrasah is decorated with Khorezm-style majolica in white, blue, and light blue tones. The design is distinguished by the portal entrance, tile-clad surfaces, and the decorative rhythm characteristic of Khiva. On the ground floor, there was once a library associated with the madrasah and serving its students, which emphasizes the educational role of the complex.
A visit to the madrasah is interesting not only from an architectural point of view, but also as part of a walk through Ichan Kala, which is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Here, it is easy to trace the connection between educational buildings, commercial structures, and city gates that shaped the everyday life of old Khiva.

A late Khivan madrasah near the market and city gates
From the outside, visitors first notice the tall portal and the majolica cladding with geometric and floral motifs. For 19th-century Khiva, the combination of a brick base with rich ceramic decoration was characteristic, and here it is especially evident on the facade facing the city street. The inner courtyard and hujra cells help illustrate the layout of a traditional educational institution in Central Asia.
The practical side of the building's history is also interesting. The madrasah was connected with waqf commercial properties, whose income went toward its maintenance. Such a system was common for Islamic educational institutions, and in the case of the Alla-Kuli Khan Madrasah it is especially evident thanks to its proximity to the tim and the caravan trading area. This makes it possible to see how education, religious life, and trade existed within a single urban environment.
During a walk through this part of Ichan Kala, a visit to the madrasah can be combined with the Alla-Kuli Khan Tim, the Palvan-Darvaza Gate, and the nearby Khojamberdybiy Madrasah. This quarter provides a good impression of the eastern part of the old city, where educational, commercial, and defensive structures are concentrated.
The madrasah is usually reached on foot along routes within Ichan Kala; if you enter the old city through the Palvan-Darvaza Gate, the building is very close by. It is best included in a sightseeing walk through the historic center of Khiva.
