Bab-us Selam Gate
Bab-us Selam Gate at Topkapi Palace, Istanbul
The Bab-us Selam Gate is located at Topkapi Palace in the Sultanahmet district, in the historic center of Istanbul. It is the passage between the first and second courtyards of the complex, which in the Ottoman era separated the more open space from the inner part of the sultan's residence. For palace visitors, the gate serves as an important point on the route and helps to better understand how one of the main state centers of the Ottoman Empire was organized.
The structure belongs to the early period of Topkapi's history, which began soon after Mehmed II's conquest of Constantinople. The gate's present appearance is associated with several stages of reconstruction, but its foundation preserves the early structure of the palace complex. Externally, Bab-us Selam is easily recognized by its two tall towers with pointed roofs and fortified silhouette, which distinguish it from the palace's other entrances.
Historically, the gate had not only a practical but also a ceremonial function. It was here that the boundary between the outer and more official part of the palace was emphasized, and the order of passage followed strict court etiquette. By tradition, only the sultan was allowed to ride through Bab-us Selam on horseback, while everyone else had to dismount.
Today, Bab-us Selam is of interest primarily as part of the overall visit to Topkapi. It is not a separate attraction for a long visit, but an important architectural and historical landmark that makes a walk through the palace easier to understand. Through this gate begins the transition to the spaces where the palace services, administrative rooms, and routes to the more closed areas of the complex were located.

History and architecture of the Bab-us Selam Gate
The passage marks the transition from the outer part of the palace to its administrative zones.
The ceremonial passage to the inner part of Topkapi Palace
When viewing the gate, it is worth paying attention to its composition: the central passageway, massive walls, and two symmetrical towers create a distinctly official entrance to the second courtyard. Here it is clearly visible how the architecture combined defensive features with a representative function. This is one of those places in Topkapi where the transition from the outer courtyard to the space of the palace administration is felt especially clearly.
After passing through the gate, visitors enter the second courtyard, where in Ottoman times the service and utility parts of the complex were located, as well as buildings connected with the work of the palace. The passage through Bab-us Selam itself usually takes little time, but it is important as part of a sequential introduction to the structure of the residence. It is better to perceive it not separately, but in connection with the first courtyard, the second courtyard, and the further pavilions of the palace.
Nearby are Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Gulhane Park, and the Istanbul Archaeological Museum, so a visit to the gate is convenient to include in a walk around Sultanahmet. The easiest way to get here is by taking tram T1 to the "Sultanahmet" or "Gulhane" stop, after which the entrance to the palace can be reached on foot.
