Babadag Mountain

Babadag Mountain in Fethiye, Turkey

Babadag Mountain is located south of Fethiye, above the resort area of Oludeniz, and is considered one of the most prominent natural landmarks in this area. The name is usually translated as “father mountain.” The height of the main peak of the massif reaches 1,969 meters, so the mountain stands out clearly in the coastal landscape and can be seen from different parts of the surrounding area.

Babadag is primarily known as one of the main places for paragliding in the Fethiye area. This is due to its great height, open slopes, and location above the sea. In clear weather, there are wide views from here of Fethiye Bay, the beaches and lagoon of Oludeniz, mountain ridges, and the coastline; on days with especially good visibility, the island of Rhodes can also be seen.

The slopes of the mountain are covered with Mediterranean vegetation typical of southwestern Turkey, including pine areas and mountain shrubs. People come here not only for flights, but also for mountain ascents, viewpoints, and cooler air compared to the coast. It is a natural location that offers the opportunity to see the surroundings of Fethiye from a great height and to look at the coastline from a new perspective.

Panoramas of Oludeniz and high-altitude launch sites

Babadag has equipped areas from which paragliders take off at different altitudes, depending on weather conditions and level of experience. Even for those who do not plan to fly, the mountain is interesting as a viewpoint: from the upper sections, the curved shoreline, the Oludeniz lagoon, and the mountain slopes descending to the sea are clearly visible. The landscape changes noticeably as you ascend - from forested areas to more open rocky slopes.

A visit to Babadag is usually associated with an ascent along the mountain road or with the use of the Babadag Teleferik cable car, which connects the lower part of the Oludeniz area with the high-mountain zone. At the top, visitors usually spend time at the viewpoints, watch the takeoffs and landings of paragliders, and take photos of the coast. The weather at altitude can be noticeably cooler and windier than by the sea, so this should be taken into account when planning the trip.

Nearby are the beach and lagoon of Oludeniz, the nature park by the Blue Lagoon, as well as the Lycian Way, sections of which pass through the mountains above the coast. The most convenient way to get here is from Fethiye via Oludeniz by car, taxi, or transfer; local transport from the resort area also goes to the cable car station.
