Bayezid Mosque
Bayezid Mosque, Bursa, Turkey
Bayezid Mosque is an active Muslim shrine in Bursa, named after Sultan Bayezid I. It is located in the eastern part of the city, in the Yildirim district, and is part of a religious complex of the same name.
The building was erected at the end of the 14th century, when Bursa was the capital of the early Ottoman state. Around the mosque a typical complex for that period developed, with educational and public buildings.
The architecture reflects early Ottoman techniques: domed roofs, strict proportions, neat stone masonry, and restrained decoration. The prayer hall is laid out clearly and functionally, which is characteristic of the early Ottoman tradition.
In 1855 the mosque was damaged in a strong earthquake and was later restored. Today it is a notable historical landmark on Bursa's map, interesting for those studying the formation of the Ottoman style and the city's history.

Visit outside prayer times.
Kulliye of Sultan Bayezid I in Yildirim
Inside Bayezid Mosque you can see the mihrab and minbar, calligraphic panels, and calm lighting under the dome. Plan your visit outside prayer times, entry requires removing shoes, and it is better to photograph without flash and without disturbing worshippers.
Outside, the portal and the arcades in front of the entrance draw attention, as do the neat stone masonry and the old decorative details that survived restorations. The courtyard is a good place to take a short pause and look at the architecture at a relaxed pace.
The walk can easily be combined with visits to nearby sights in the Yildirim district, such as the Green Mosque and Green Tomb, as well as the Emir Sultan Mosque. It's convenient to create a route of Bursa's early Ottoman shrines here and spend 1-2 hours on an unhurried visit.
It's easiest to get here from central Bursa by city bus to the Yildirim district, getting off at stops near the mosque.
