Beyazit Tower

Beyazit Tower in Istanbul, Turkey - a historic landmark

Beyazit Tower is located in the historic part of Istanbul, near Beyazit Square, on the grounds of the main campus of Istanbul University in the Fatih district. It is one of the city's most famous fire watchtowers, recalling a time when much of the capital of the Ottoman Empire was built of wood and fires posed a serious threat.

The current stone tower was built in 1828 by order of Sultan Mahmud II. The project is usually associated with the architect Senekerim Balyan. It was erected on the site of an earlier wooden tower, lost after a fire, and became part of the city's observation system.

The structure rises to approximately 85 meters and is clearly visible in the panorama of the historic center. The tower is distinguished by its строгими proportions and combines a utilitarian purpose with features of 19th-century Ottoman architecture. In the past, its upper levels were used to watch for fires and transmit signals about fire danger.

For tourists, the tower is primarily of interest as a historic landmark in the Beyazit area and an important feature of the old urban landscape. It is convenient to view during a walk through Fatih, together with Beyazit Square, the Grand Bazaar, and other monuments in central Istanbul.

The tower stands inside the university complex, so for most visitors it remains an external landmark best viewed from Beyazit Square and the neighboring streets. Its upper tiers are especially visible, where observers were once stationed to watch for smoke rising above the city.

The tower's appeal is connected not only with its height but also with the function it long fulfilled in the life of Istanbul. Before the advent of modern communication systems, such watchtowers were an important part of urban safety. Beyazit Tower was used for visual signals that helped quickly report fires in different parts of the city.

During a walk around the area, it is also worth paying attention to the surrounding historic setting: nearby are the gates of Istanbul University, Beyazit Mosque, the Sahaflar Carsisi book bazaar, and the Grand Bazaar. This makes it possible to combine viewing the tower with visiting several significant places within one quarter.

It is easy to get here by T1 tram to the “Beyazit - Kapalicarsi” stop or on foot from the Sultanahmet area. The tower is especially interesting for those who want to better understand how everyday Istanbul of the 19th century was organized and how the city coped with frequent fires.
