Cankiri Salt Cave

Cankiri Salt Cave

Cankiri Salt Cave in Ankara, Turkey

Cankiri Salt Cave is located in Cankiri Province, northeast of Ankara, near the city of Cankiri. It is one of Turkey’s well-known salt caves, formed within ancient salt layers. The underground spaces here were created as a result of natural geological processes and many years of salt extraction.

Inside, visitors can see salt walls, vaults, and wide halls with a characteristic white-gray texture. The cave attracts visitors not only with the unusual appearance of its underground cavities, but also with its stable cool microclimate, which differs noticeably from the temperature on the surface. Thanks to this, a visit is especially comfortable during the warmer months.

The site is also known as a place of wellness interest: in certain areas of the cave, time spent there is associated with speleotherapy practices, although tourists more often come here for the underground environment itself and the unusual terrain. Exploring the cave makes it possible to learn about the nature of salt deposits and to see a type of underground landscape that is rare for the region.

Cankiri Salt Cave is suitable for those interested in geology, natural sites, and unusual routes outside Ankara. A trip here can easily be combined with a visit to the city of Cankiri and other places in central Anatolia.

During the visit, tourists walk through equipped sections of the cave, where massive salt surfaces, niches, and recesses formed by natural processes and salt extraction are clearly visible. The lighting helps reveal the texture of the walls and the scale of the interior spaces, while the cool air makes the walk inside noticeably different from a typical visit to natural sites on the surface.

The main interest here is connected with the cave’s geological structure and its microclimate. In some parts, rest areas and short-stay zones associated with speleotherapy practice are organized. Even without wellness programs, visitors can calmly explore the underground galleries, take photographs, and get an idea of what salt workings look like from the inside.

The trip can be complemented by a walk around the city of Cankiri, where museum and historical sites of the provincial center are located. The cave is usually reached from the city of Cankiri by car or as part of a local excursion, and the journey from Ankara takes several hours.
