Cavusin Rock City

Cavusin Rock City in Cappadocia, Turkey - an early Christian settlement

Cavusin Rock City is located in Cappadocia, between Goreme and Avanos, next to the present-day village of Cavusin. It is one of the characteristic settlements of the region, where living quarters, utility rooms, stairways, passageways, and churches were carved into the soft volcanic tuff. The historic part occupies a high rock massif, while the modern village lies below, along the road.

Cavusin took shape during the early Christian and Byzantine periods and continued to exist in later eras. In the past, it was home to a Greek Orthodox population that left the village in 1923 during the population exchange between Turkey and Greece. Over time, some of the old rock houses and passageways were damaged by erosion and collapses, so the ancient quarter was gradually abandoned.

The main monuments of Cavusin are connected with the early Christian history of Cappadocia. It is home to the Church of John the Baptist, usually considered one of the earliest surviving churches in the region, as well as the Church of Nikephoros Phokas with a dated Byzantine inscription and fragments of paintings. For visitors, Cavusin is interesting not only for its history, but also for the opportunity to see what a rock settlement adapted for living, defense, and religious practice looked like.

Today, the old part of Cavusin can be explored along paths and viewing areas, although some zones may be closed for safety reasons. Some climbs are steep, and the surface is uneven and loose, so comfortable footwear is needed for a walk. From the upper points, there are views of the surrounding valleys, including toward Rose Valley and Red Valley, and near the village there is parking, cafés, and stops for tourist transport.

Cave dwellings, ancient churches, and trails above the valleys

During a walk through Cavusin, you can examine the preserved facades of rock houses, carved rooms, niches, windows, and sections of internal passageways that give an idea of the everyday life of the old settlement. The structure of the quarter is best understood from below and from the side trails, from where it is possible to see how residential and utility spaces were arranged in tiers within a single massif.

The rock-cut churches deserve special attention. The Church of John the Baptist is known for its early origin and large interior space, while the Church of Nikephoros Phokas is associated with the Byzantine period and preserves fragments of wall paintings. The condition of the monuments may change, so some spaces are sometimes accessible only for viewing from the outside or with restrictions.

Cavusin is suitable for a short independent walk and for continuing along the surrounding trails. From here, it is convenient to head toward Rose Valley and Red Valley, and nearby are also Goreme, Avanos, and the Zelve Open-Air Museum. For a visit, it is worth taking into account the heat in the middle of the day, the lack of even surfaces, and the need to choose your route carefully on steep sections.

The easiest way to get here is via the road between Goreme and Avanos - the village of Cavusin is located directly on this route and can be reached by car, taxi, or local excursion transfers.
