Dalyan Town

Dalyan Town in the Dalyan area, Turkey

Dalyan is a small resort town in southwestern Turkey, in the Ortaca district of Mugla Province, between Dalaman and the coast. It stands on the river of the same name, which connects Lake Koycegiz with the sea, so life here is closely linked to the water: sightseeing boats travel along the river, and reed beds, channels, and marshy areas of the delta stretch all around.

Dalyan is known for its combination of natural landscapes and ancient monuments. On the opposite bank of the river, the Lycian rock tombs carved into the cliffs above the water are clearly visible. Nearby are the ruins of ancient Kaunos, one of the important cities of this region in antiquity, where the remains of a theater, city walls, and other structures have been preserved.

The surroundings of Dalyan are part of a protected natural area with a rich ecosystem. The river delta and lagoons attract those who enjoy peaceful walks and birdwatching, and by water you can reach the sandy Iztuzu Beach, which separates the delta from the sea. The area is also known for the thermal springs and mud baths near Lake Koycegiz, which are usually visited as part of boat routes.

Dalyan is suitable for those who want to combine a relaxed holiday, trips by water, and getting acquainted with the nature and antiquities of southwestern Turkey. People come here for river trips, visits to archaeological sites, excursions to the beach, and отдых in a calmer setting than at the major seaside resorts.

Here, river routes, archaeology, and relaxation by the delta come together.

River routes, ancient ruins, and a delta by the coast

In Dalyan itself, most of the activity is concentrated along the waterfront and near the piers, from where boats depart along the river and through the delta. During these trips, you can see reed channels, rock tombs on the high bank, and marshy areas inhabited by birds and other aquatic fauna. The style of отдых here is usually calm: walks through the town center, trips by water, small cafes, and views of the river.

For independent sightseeing, ancient Kaunos, located next to the town on the opposite bank, is of interest. The archaeological zone is usually reached by boat or via the crossing, after which you can climb up to the ruins and see the preserved ancient theater, fragments of fortifications, and viewpoints overlooking the surroundings. The rock tombs are best viewed from the water or from the waterfront, especially in good light.

From Dalyan, people often head to Iztuzu Beach, known for its long strip of sand between the sea and the delta, as well as to the mud baths and thermal springs near Lake Koycegiz. In the surrounding area, you can also visit Lake Koycegiz itself and travel toward Dalaman if you plan to move around the region.

The nearest major transport hub is Dalaman Airport, from where Dalyan is usually reached by car, transfer, or bus with a connection. The town itself is easy to explore on foot, and many local routes are connected specifically with boat transport.
