Gulhane Park

Gulhane Park in Istanbul, Turkey - an old palace garden

Gulhane Park is located in the center of Istanbul, next to Topkapi Palace and within walking distance of the Sultanahmet district. Historically, this area belonged to the outer gardens of the sultan's palace, and the modern park occupies part of the former palace grounds. The name Gulhane is usually associated with the roses that were grown here during the Ottoman period.

The park is situated on a slope descending toward Sarayburnu, the Golden Horn, and the Sea of Marmara. Thanks to the terrain, there are paths at different levels, shaded areas, and viewing points. It is one of the oldest public parks in Istanbul, combining urban greenery, a historic setting, and proximity to the main landmarks of the old city.

On the grounds, you can see not only alleys and flower beds, but also individual historical objects, including the Gothic Column from Roman times. After landscaping improvements, the park became convenient for everyday walks: there are benches, places to relax, and cafes, while museums and palace complexes are located nearby. In spring, the park is especially striking because of the tulips and other seasonal plantings, but it is visited throughout the year.

People come to Gulhane mainly for a walk in the historic part of the city. Inside the park, there are wide paths, areas beneath tall trees, open lawns, and terraces on the slope. At different times of the year, the design of the flower beds changes: in spring, tulips stand out, later roses and other ornamental plants.

Among the interesting details, it is worth noting the Gothic Column, a late Roman monument hidden among the greenery in the upper part of the park. In the lower parts of the route, there are views toward the Bosphorus, the Golden Horn, and the coastal strip. The park is suitable for a peaceful walk between visits to the museums and architectural landmarks of old Istanbul.

Nearby are Topkapi Palace, the Istanbul Archaeological Museum, Hagia Sophia, and the Blue Mosque. The park is easy to reach on foot from the T1 tram stops Sultanahmet or Gulhane, as well as from the side of Topkapi Palace and the Sirkeci district.
