Italian Tower

Italian Tower in St. Peter's Castle, Bodrum

The Italian Tower is located within St. Peter's Castle in the center of Bodrum, at the entrance to the harbor. It is one of the five main towers of the fortress, which during the era of the Knights Hospitaller were associated with different national divisions of the garrison.

The tower belongs to the castle's defensive system, built in the 15th century. In terms of its significance, it was part of a unified complex of walls, passageways, and fortified points that controlled the approaches to the fortress both from the sea and from the city. The Italian Tower is traditionally considered one of the large towers of the castle.

For tourists, it is primarily of interest as an element of well-preserved medieval fortification. While exploring the castle, visitors can see how defense, observation, and communication between different parts of the fortress were organized, as well as gain a better understanding of the layout of the entire ensemble.

A visit to the Italian Tower is usually combined with a walk through St. Peter's Castle itself and its exhibitions. This place is suitable for those who want not only to enjoy views of Bodrum Bay, but also to learn about the history of the fortress, which has become one of the city's main historical attractions.

The Italian Tower is of interest not as a standalone building, but as an important fragment of the castle's overall structure. During the visit, visitors pass through inner courtyards, stone passageways, and sections of the fortress walls, from which they can observe the layout of the defensive structures and the position of the towers in relation to the port.

Within the castle complex, attention is usually drawn to the thick walls, narrow passages, viewing platforms, and characteristic masonry typical of medieval fortresses in the Eastern Mediterranean. Depending on which areas are open to visitors, it is possible to climb to observation points and look out over the marina, Bodrum's old town, and the coastline.

Nearby are the other towers of St. Peter's Castle, the Museum of Underwater Archaeology, and the Bodrum promenade, so a visit can easily be included in a walk through the city center. The castle is easy to reach on foot from central Bodrum and the harbor area.
