English Tower

English Tower in the Castle of St. Peter, Bodrum, Turkey

The English Tower is located in the Castle of St. Peter in the center of Bodrum, on its southwestern side facing the sea. It is one of the fortress towers built by the Knights Hospitaller in the 15th century, when the castle served as an important defensive stronghold on the Aegean coast.

The tower got its name from its association with the English division of the order. In historical descriptions, it is also mentioned as the Tower of St. Catherine and the Lion Tower. The structure was part of the castle's overall fortification system and was used to monitor and defend the sea approaches.

Several levels have been preserved inside the tower, and a prison cell was previously located in its lower section. Of particular interest are the heraldic images on the walls, including the coat of arms of the English king Henry IV and symbols associated with the English nobility and the Plantagenet dynasty.

For tourists, the English Tower is of interest as part of one of Bodrum's most famous landmarks. It helps visitors better understand the layout of a medieval fortress and see details that usually go unnoticed during a general visit to the castle.

When visiting the English Tower, it is worth paying attention not only to its location along the outer line of the fortress, but also to the preserved stone details associated with the order's symbolism. Such elements make it possible to imagine how the sections of the castle assigned to different national groups of knights were divided.

Visitors usually see the tower as part of the route through the Castle of St. Peter. During the walk, they can observe the massive walls, narrow openings, and interior spaces typical of late medieval defensive architecture. The lower level, where the prison was once located, makes this place especially illustrative from the point of view of the daily life of the garrison.

Nearby are other parts of the castle, the Museum of Underwater Archaeology, and the Bodrum waterfront overlooking the harbor. The easiest way to get here is to travel to the center of Bodrum and then walk to the castle from the port side.
