Khoja-Zaynuddin Complex

Khoja-Zaynuddin Complex in Bukhara, Uzbekistan

The Khoja-Zaynuddin Complex is located in the historic center of Bukhara, in the old residential part of the city near the Ark Fortress. It is one of the monuments associated with the traditional urban environment of Bukhara, where religious and public buildings shaped the structure of the neighborhoods. The complex took shape in the 16th century and is among the preserved sites of the old city.

It includes a khanqah and a hauz. The khanqah served as a place for prayer, communication, and residence for people associated with the Sufi tradition, while the hauz was an important part of urban life in the hot climate. This combination of a religious building and a water reservoir is characteristic of Bukhara and helps to better understand the layout of its historic neighborhoods.

The complex is also associated with a mazar, which local tradition attributes to Khoja Zayn ad-Din, also known as Khoja-Turk. The tombstone is located in a small enclosed courtyard. This site is of interest as an example of the modest form of a revered open-air burial found in the Islamic culture of the region.

For tourists, the complex is of interest not only as a separate monument but also as part of the everyday appearance of old Bukhara. Here, it is possible to see what religious and public spaces looked like within residential development and combine the visit with a walk through the nearby streets of the historic center.

The Khoja-Zaynuddin Complex and its historic setting in Bukhara

Here you can see a khanqah, hauz, and mazar within an old neighborhood.

When visiting the complex, attention is usually drawn to the combination of several elements within one small space. The khanqah reflects the religious function of the site, the hauz recalls the old system of urban reservoirs, and the mazar adds a memorial layer connected with local veneration. Thanks to this, the complex is perceived not as a separate building but as part of the living structure of a historic neighborhood.

Visitors come here primarily for a quiet walk through old Bukhara and to discover a less ceremonial side of the city. Here, it is possible to observe the traditional layout of the site, pay attention to the placement of the courtyard and tombstone, and imagine how such spaces were used by residents and pilgrims. The place is especially interesting for those who want to see not only major monuments but also more intimate elements of the historic environment.

Nearby are the Ark Fortress and other monuments of central Bukhara, so a visit to the complex can easily be included in an old city itinerary. The easiest way to get here is by taxi or on foot from the Ark and neighboring sights of the historic center.
