The Ulugh Beg Madrasah is located in the historic center of Bukhara, within the old city that is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It was built in 1417 by order of Mirzo Ulugh Beg, a ruler of the Timurid dynasty known for his interest in science and education. For Bukhara, it is an important monument from the period when the city remained one of the major centers of Islamic scholarship in the region.
The building is among the earliest surviving madrasahs in Central Asia. Its layout is typical of educational buildings of that time: a rectangular inner courtyard surrounded by hujras, and a main facade with a high portal. The decoration features geometric ornaments, ceramic inserts, and inscriptions characteristic of Timurid architecture, while the overall appearance is more austere and restrained than that of many later buildings in Bukhara.
A distinctive feature of the madrasah is clearly visible in its proximity to the Abdulaziz Khan Madrasah, located opposite. Together they form the Kosh Madrasah ensemble, where one can see the difference between the architecture of the 15th and 17th centuries: Ulugh Beg's earlier building appears more laconic, while the Abdulaziz Khan building is richer in decorative details. This comparison is especially interesting for those who want to better understand the development of Bukhara's architecture.
Today, the madrasah is of interest not only as a separate monument, but also as part of the cohesive historic setting of central Bukhara. It is easy to visit during a walking tour of the old city, combining it with Lyabi-Hauz Square, the trading domes, and other well-known monuments nearby.

The interior space of the madrasah is organized around a courtyard, along the perimeter of which rooms for students were located. Even if some of the interiors have changed over time, the structure of the complex itself helps to imagine how the region's medieval educational institutions were arranged. For visitors, this is above all an opportunity to examine the layout, masonry details, and decorative elements preserved on the facades.
It is especially convenient to compare this building with the Abdulaziz Khan Madrasah, which stands opposite: the difference in decoration and composition is noticeable already from the square. Nearby are also the Lyabi-Hauz ensemble, the trading domes of old Bukhara, and other monuments of the historic center, so the visit can easily be included in a single walking route.
The easiest way to get here is on foot through Bukhara's historic center, since many of the main sights are located a short distance from one another. Before visiting, it is worth checking access conditions on site, as the viewing arrangements for individual rooms may change.
