Lake Koycegiz

Lake Koycegiz in Dalyan, Turkey: lake, delta, and channel

Lake Koycegiz is located in the Dalyan area, in southwestern Turkey, in Mugla Province, between the inland mountain slopes and the Mediterranean coast. It is a large freshwater lake connected to the sea by the natural Dalyan Channel, which passes through a branching delta and reaches Iztuzu Beach. Thanks to this connection, the lake and the surrounding wetlands form a single natural system.

The place is known not only for its landscapes, but also for its ancient monuments. Along the cliffs by the Dalyan Channel, Lycian rock tombs carved high above the water are clearly visible. These structures belong to the ancient history of the region and usually become one of the most memorable parts of a boat trip between the lake and the sea.

The shores of the lake, the reed beds, and the channels of the delta are important for the local ecosystem. Fish, waterfowl, and other species associated with freshwater and coastal habitats live here. Thanks to the combination of open water, marshy areas, and channels, the area preserves its natural diversity and attracts those interested in peaceful water routes and nature watching.

For tourists, Lake Koycegiz is primarily appealing for boat trips, delta panoramas, and the opportunity to see several characteristic places of the region in a single route. From the water, it is convenient to observe the shores, ancient tombs, reed labyrinths, and areas where the natural landscape gradually transitions into the sea coast.

Freshwater lake, delta, and the route to the Iztuzu coast

On the lake, visitors usually choose excursions on tour boats, small motorboats, kayaks, or other calm vessels suitable for the shallow and winding sections of the delta. During the route, you can see the wide surface of the lake, reed channels, areas with open views of the surrounding hills, and the transition to the narrower course of the Dalyan Channel. The water here changes in character from the open lake expanse to the slow current in the delta.

One of the notable sights on the lake is Prison Island. It is known for the ruins of old buildings and serves as a reminder that the island was used at different times as a fortified point and a place of confinement. On some routes, it is viewed from the water without a long stop on shore, so it is better to уточнять the format of the visit in advance with carriers or tour organizers.

The area is suitable for birdwatching, calm fishing in permitted places, and leisurely trips on the water without strong currents or high waves. Nearby are the Lycian tombs by the Dalyan Channel, the mud baths and thermal springs around Sultaniye, and the sandy spit of Iztuzu at the point where the waterway reaches the sea. These places are often combined into one water excursion.

The easiest way to reach the lake is from Dalyan or from the town of Koycegiz, where boats and sightseeing routes depart. From the Dalaman area, visitors usually come here by car or transfer and then continue the journey by water.
