Lake Nar
Lake Nar in Cappadocia, Turkey - crater lake in Aksaray Province
Lake Nar is located in the southwestern part of Cappadocia, in Aksaray Province, between Guzelyurt and the Ihlara Valley. It is a crater lake filling a volcanic basin at an altitude of about 1,360 meters above sea level. From above, it is easy to recognize by its rounded heart-like outline, and along the edges a distinct rocky crater rim is visible.
The main feature of this place is the combination of volcanic terrain and weak geothermal activity. Warm mineral waters emerge in the surrounding area, and small thermal facilities operate nearby. The composition of the water and seasonal conditions affect the color and clarity of the lake, so it looks different at different times of the year; in winter, ice may appear in places on the surface.
The lake is of interest to those who want to see a lesser-known side of Cappadocia beyond the popular rock valleys and underground cities. From the edge of the crater, wide views open over the surrounding volcanic plateau, while at the shore you can observe the calm water surface and the layered slopes of the basin. It is more of a natural viewpoint and a place for a short stop than an area for extended relaxation by the water.
The infrastructure here remains simple: there are almost no equipped beaches, little shade, and walks on the slopes require caution because of loose sections. People usually come here by car from Ihlara, Guzelyurt, or Aksaray, combining the trip with visits to nearby natural and historical sites in the region.

Lake Nar - overview and visiting tips
A stop for a short walk and to explore the crater and shores.
Crater with geothermal springs and views of the plateau
The best viewpoints are on the upper rim of the crater and on the approach roads to the lake, where the shape of the volcanic basin is clearly visible. In calm weather, the water surface reflects the relief of the slopes, and as the light changes, differences in the shades of the water become noticeable. While there, it is worth paying attention not only to the lake itself, but also to the structure of the crater, the rocky slopes, and the open landscape around it.
At the shore, the atmosphere is more intimate: here you can get closer to the water, take photographs, and examine areas associated with geothermal activity in the surroundings. Swimming in the lake itself is usually not the main reason for visiting, and there are almost no equipped areas for beach recreation. For a walk, closed-toe shoes, sun protection, and a supply of water are best, especially in the warm season.
A trip to the lake is often combined with visits to the Ihlara Valley, monastic monuments around Guzelyurt, and other routes through southwestern Cappadocia. Thanks to its distance from the busiest tourist spots, it is usually quieter here than in the central parts of the region.
The most convenient way to get there is by car from Aksaray, Guzelyurt, or from the Ihlara side via local roads, some of which are unpaved near the viewpoints and the shore.
