Phaselis Aqueduct

Phaselis Aqueduct by the ruins of the ancient city, Kemer, Turkey

The Phaselis Aqueduct is located within the ruins of ancient Phaselis near Tekirova, south of Kemer. It is usually visited during a walk through the archaeological zone, where streets, public buildings, sections of fortifications, and access to the bays have been preserved. This site fits well into the overall route through the ancient city and helps visitors see Phaselis not only as a port, but also as an organized urban space.

The preserved section of the aqueduct belongs to the water supply system of the ancient city, which developed especially during the Roman period. Water reached Phaselis from springs in the surrounding area and, along one section, passed through an arched stone structure. This fragment, with its high supports and arches, is now the most recognizable among the engineering structures in the excavation area.

The aqueduct itself has not been fully preserved, but even in its current state it shows how important the water supply was for the city’s daily life. Structures like this ensured the operation of baths and supplied residential quarters and public buildings. A visit to the aqueduct complements the impression of ancient Phaselis by showing how its practical and utility systems were organized.

For tourists, this is прежде всего an interesting element of a large historical complex rather than a separate isolated monument. It is worth visiting for those who want to take a closer look at the engineering side of the ancient city and combine exploring the ruins with a walk along the coast near Tekirova, not far from Kemer.

The aqueduct is located not far from the main walking routes through the territory of Phaselis, so it can easily be included in a visit without making a separate detour. On site, visitors can see the preserved stone supports and arched spans through which water was brought to the city. This site is best understood together with the other ruins in order to see how the engineering system was connected to the urban layout.

During the visit, it is worth paying attention to the masonry, the proportions of the arches, and the position of the structure in relation to the ancient settlement. Even the small preserved fragment shows that Phaselis had a well-planned infrastructure necessary for the life of a port city. The aqueduct is especially interesting for those who want to see not only temples and streets, but also the practical elements of the ancient environment.

Nearby are the main street of the ancient city, the remains of public buildings, sections of the necropolis, and the bays of Phaselis, which many visitors head to after exploring the ruins. People usually arrive here via Tekirova on the road to the Phaselis archaeological zone, and then continue the route on foot from the entrance along marked paths.
