Po-i-Kalyan Architectural Complex
Po-i-Kalyan Architectural Complex in Bukhara, Uzbekistan
Po-i-Kalyan is the largest religious and architectural ensemble in the historic center of Bukhara in Uzbekistan. It is located in the old city, among the quarters that form part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, and brings together several key monuments of medieval Islamic architecture. For tourists, it is one of the clearest places to see how Bukhara's urban appearance was shaped over the centuries.
The ensemble includes the Kalyan Minaret, the Kalyan Mosque, and the Mir-i-Arab Madrasah. The oldest and most recognizable structure is considered to be the Kalyan Minaret, built in the 12th century. Its tall brick tower with decorative bands and an arched rotunda at the top served for a long time as a landmark in the urban landscape and was an important part of the city's religious life.
Next to the minaret stands the Kalyan Mosque, the main congregational mosque of Bukhara. It is known for its large inner courtyard, arcades, and domed ceilings, as well as its richly decorated portal. Opposite is the 16th-century Mir-i-Arab Madrasah, one of the city's most famous religious educational institutions, which still retains religious significance today.
Po-i-Kalyan is interesting not only for its individual buildings, but also for the integrity of the entire composition. The features of Bukhara architecture are clearly visible here: brick masonry, majolica, geometric decoration, and a carefully considered balance between open space and monumental facades. Exploring the ensemble is especially convenient during a walk through the historic center of Bukhara, where other well-known monuments are also located nearby.

Medieval ensemble with a minaret, mosque, and madrasah
In Po-i-Kalyan Square, it is the interaction of the three main structures that is most clearly perceived. The Kalyan Minaret stands out for its strict form and intricate brickwork pattern, which is noticeable even without bright cladding. The Kalyan Mosque opens onto a large courtyard with galleries and many domes, while the Mir-i-Arab Madrasah draws attention with its symmetrical facade and glazed tile decoration.
During a visit, it is worth paying attention to the decorative details: carved and geometric ornamentation, the combination of unglazed brick and majolica, as well as the proportions of the portals and arches. This place is suitable for a calm architectural visit, photography, and becoming acquainted with the structure of the religious center of medieval Bukhara. At different times of day, the lighting noticeably changes the perception of the facades and decorative elements.
Nearby are the trading domes of old Bukhara, the Ulugh Beg Madrasah, and the Ark Fortress, so a visit to the ensemble can easily be included in a walking route through the city center. Po-i-Kalyan is usually reached on foot through the historic center of Bukhara or by taxi to the nearest streets of the old city.
