Saklikent Gorge
Saklikent Gorge in Fethiye, Turkey
Saklikent Gorge is located in the mountainous area southeast of the center of Fethiye and is considered one of the most famous natural attractions in this region. It was formed by a stream that eroded the limestone rocks over centuries, creating a long and in places very narrow canyon. The length of the gorge is usually given as about 18 kilometers, and in some sections the walls rise to a considerable height.
For visitors, the initial part of the route is the most accessible, where the entrance is equipped with walkways and crossings. Farther on, the path follows the riverbed: you have to walk through the water, go around rocks, and pass through sections with a fast current. Even in the hot season, the water here remains cold, so the walk is noticeably different from a regular hike on a dry trail.
Saklikent is interesting not only for its size, but also for the contrast in landscape. Right at the entrance it is usually lively, with cafés and rest areas, and after only a short time the route leads into a harsher rocky space with narrow passages, small cascades, and shaded sections. For this reason, the gorge is often chosen by those who want to combine a trip from Fethiye with a walk in nature and cool off in the summer heat.
Traversing the entire canyon is not suitable for everyone and requires preparation, so most guests limit themselves to a relatively short walk through the most accessible part. For the visit, people usually bring footwear that can get wet, as the rocks on the bottom are slippery, and the water depth in some sections may vary depending on the season and the flow level.

Saklikent Gorge: a route through the river and stone walls
The route runs through cold water among high limestone cliffs.

After the entrance area, the route first runs along wooden walkways fixed to the rock, and then continues into the riverbed. Here visitors walk directly through the water, between smooth boulders and pale limestone walls, which in narrow places almost close above the passage. Depending on the water level, part of the route may be easy, while another part may require greater caution.
Inside the gorge, you can see sections with different landforms: narrow corridors, small waterfalls, hollows carved by water, and more open areas where the current becomes calmer. Many come here for a short walk in the cool water, photography, and the feeling of a sharp climate change compared with the coast. For a comfortable visit, sandals or shoes with good grip that you do not mind getting wet are useful.
Near the entrance, restaurants and cafés are usually open, some of them located by the water on raised platforms. In the surrounding area there are also the ruins of the ancient city of Tlos and the Yaka Plateau, which are sometimes included in the same trip. The gorge is most often visited by car or on an excursion from the center of Fethiye, and the drive takes about an hour depending on the route and the season.
