Sille Village

Sille Village in Konya, Turkey - Historic Architecture and Aya Eleni Church

Sille is located about 8 km northwest of Konya city center, in the Selcuklu district. Today it is part of the urban area, but the village is noticeably different from the central neighborhoods: old streets, stone buildings, and a more intimate historical atmosphere have been preserved here.

The settlement is known for its layered past. Before the population exchange between Greece and Turkey in 1923, both Orthodox Greeks and Muslims lived here, so traces of different religious and cultural traditions have been preserved in Sille. It is precisely this mixed history that makes it one of the most interesting old settlements in the vicinity of Konya.

The main attraction of Sille is the Aya Eleni Church, associated with the Byzantine tradition and open to visitors after restoration. In addition to it, old stone houses, narrow streets, small bridges, springs, and rock-cut spaces and religious sites in the surrounding area also draw attention.

People usually come here for a few hours to walk through the historical part of the village, look at architectural details, and see another side of Konya - one not connected with the large city avenues and museums in the city center. Sille is well suited to those interested in local history, religious heritage, and traditional Anatolian architecture.

Sille Village: Route, Landmarks, and Practical Tips

A walk through the narrow streets introduces visitors to local history and architecture.

Sille Village

Stone streets, Aya Eleni Church, and traces of the old settlement

A walk through Sille usually begins in the central part of the valley, where old stone houses and streets climbing the slopes stretch out. In the village, you can see traditional residential buildings, small squares, old fountains and bridges, as well as areas where the historical fabric of the settlement is clearly visible in the terrain and layout.

The best-known site to visit is the Aya Eleni Church. It is interesting both as a monument of Christian heritage in the Konya area and as part of the history of the local Orthodox community. In the Sille area, there are also rock-cut spaces, small chapels, and traces of earlier settlements that show how long this area has been inhabited.

A trip here can easily be combined with visits to other places in Konya, including the Mevlana Museum and historical monuments in the city center. Sille is usually reached by car, taxi, or public transport from central Konya, and the journey takes relatively little time.

It is best to allow at least a couple of hours for a visit so you can walk calmly along the main streets and climb to the viewpoints on the slopes. The area is hilly, so it is more convenient to choose shoes with good soles for walking, especially if you plan to explore side streets and areas near the rock-cut recesses.
