Syedra Ruins
Syedra Ruins in Alanya, Turkey
The Syedra Ruins are located on a hill east of the center of Alanya, above the Mediterranean coast, between Kargicak and Seki. This is an archaeological site of an ancient city that emerged in the Hellenistic era and also existed during the Roman and Byzantine periods. Its elevated position was important for defense and made it possible to control the coastal strip.
Sections of fortress walls, fragments of streets, building foundations, columns, arch details, and remains of structures related to water supply have been preserved on the site. The cisterns and water reservoirs are especially notable - for ancient cities in the south of Asia Minor, such systems were of great importance. Among the ruins, there are also individual fragments of mosaics.
Syedra is interesting because here you can see not an isolated monument, but the structure of an entire ancient settlement. The preserved remains reveal the layout of the city, located on the slopes of the hill, with defensive and economic elements. This place is perceived primarily as an open-air archaeological area, without large-scale reconstruction.
People usually come here who want to combine a trip around the surroundings of Alanya with viewing ancient ruins and panoramic sea views. The route will suit travelers interested in the history of the region, ancient architecture, and less-visited places beyond the beach area.

Syedra Ruins and the remains of an ancient hilltop city
Traces of a city connected with water, walls, and the slopes of a hill have been preserved here.

During a walk around the site, you can see sections of the city wall, passages between the ruins, remains of public and residential buildings, as well as architectural details that highlight the layered character of the monument. The terrain here is uneven, so it is more convenient to explore the complex in shoes with non-slip soles, and keep in mind that part of the route проходит over rocky ground.
One of the most interesting elements of Syedra is the ancient water storage system. Cisterns and reservoirs have been preserved on the site, reminding visitors how important water supply was for a city on elevated ground. You can also examine individual fragments of mosaics and the remains of buildings that help to imagine the everyday life of the ancient settlement.
A visit to Syedra is often combined with a trip along the eastern coast of Alanya; along the way are Kargicak, Mahmutlar, and viewpoints overlooking the sea and mountain slopes. It is best to plan your visit for a cooler time of day, as there is little shade in the open area.
The ruins are usually reached by car or taxi from the center of Alanya toward Kargicak, after which part of the route goes uphill to the archaeological zone. Before the trip, it is useful to уточнить the condition of the access road and the visiting schedule.
