Tahtali Mountain
Tahtali Mountain in the Olympos and Cirali area, Turkey
Tahtali Mountain is located on the coast southwest of central Kemer, in the Olympos and Cirali area, within Beydaglari National Park. It is the highest peak in the coastal section of the Beydaglari range, with an elevation of 2,365 meters. In ancient tradition, the mountain was known as Olympos, and this name is associated with the ancient region where the Lycian cities were located.
Tahtali is clearly visible from the coast, from Kemer, Cirali, Olympos, and from the sea. Thanks to its height and position by the shore, it has long served as a natural landmark. From autumn to spring, the upper part of the mountain is often covered with snow, which is especially striking against the Mediterranean coast.
The change in natural zones is clearly visible on the slopes. Lower down, pine forests, shrubs, and areas of Mediterranean vegetation predominate; higher up, the landscape becomes rockier and more open. Because of the difference in elevation and its panoramic position, the mountain is of interest to those who want to see the coastline, forested slopes, and high mountain areas within a single trip.
Tahtali is often associated with legends of the Chimera, but the natural flames themselves are not on the summit, but in the Yanartas area near Cirali. These flames occur due to natural gas vents. Therefore, the ancient legends relate more to the surroundings of the mountain and ancient Olympos than to the summit itself.

Tahtali Mountain - ascent to the summit and coastal panoramas
From the summit, you can see the coast, forested slopes, and the Beydaglari ridges.
Ascent to an elevation of 2,365 meters above the Mediterranean coast
The main feature of Tahtali for tourists is the opportunity to quickly ascend from the coastal zone to the high mountain part of the range. The Olympos Teleferik cable car leads to the mountain, and its lower station is located above sea level on a forested slope. During the ascent, pine forests, rocky sections, and the coastline are clearly visible, and in clear weather wide views open over the bays and mountains around Kemer.
At the summit there are viewing platforms from which you can see the coast, the Tekirova area, Cirali, and the mountain ridges of the national park. The weather at the top is noticeably different from the coast: even in the warm season, it can be cool and windy here, so it is worth taking the temperature difference into account when planning a visit. In winter and the off-season, snow sometimes lies on the upper part of the mountain.
Tahtali is interesting not only as a viewpoint, but also as a mountain route for prepared hikers. There are trekking trails to different parts of the massif, but they are best chosen with regard to the season, the heat, and water supplies. Nearby, the trip can be combined with a visit to ancient Olympos, Cirali Beach, and the natural flames of Yanartas.
The most convenient way to get here is from Kemer, Tekirova, or Cirali: people usually reach the lower cable car station by car, taxi, or as part of an excursion. If an independent hike is planned, the route should be checked in advance according to the weather and trail conditions.
