Valide Sultan Mosque is located in the Aksaray district, not far from the center of Istanbul, in a lively part of the European side of the city. It was built in 1869-1871 by order of Sultan Abdulaziz in memory of his mother, Pertevniyal Valide Sultan. The project is usually associated with the architect Sarkis Balyan, a representative of the famous Ottoman dynasty of architects.
The building belongs to the late Ottoman period and clearly shows how traditional mosque forms and European decorative influences were combined in 19th-century architecture. The mosque has two slender minarets, a large central dome, and richly decorated facades with stone carvings. Above the entrance to the courtyard, you can see the tughra of Sultan Abdulaziz, and nearby is the mausoleum of Pertevniyal Valide Sultan, which is part of the historic complex.
Originally, the mosque occupied a prominent place in the space of Aksaray Square, but the area changed significantly later. After the reconstruction of the streets and transport infrastructure, the road level was raised, and today the building appears to be situated below the modern roadway. This detail particularly clearly shows how Istanbul's urban landscape changed in the 20th century.

It is easy to get here by T1 tram - Aksaray stop - or by metro and on foot from the area's major transport hubs. Because of the heavy traffic around the square, it is better to check the route to the mosque on a map in advance.
