Zincirli Mosque
Zincirli Mosque in Ulus, Ankara, Turkey
Zincirli Mosque is located in the Ulus district, in the historic part of central Ankara. It is a small 17th-century Ottoman mosque associated with the old urban fabric and the religious architecture of the period when Ankara retained its importance as a major Anatolian trading city.
The building is notable for its construction: stone was used in the lower part, and brick above, which is characteristic of a number of Ottoman structures from that time. It is known that the mosque was built on the site of earlier baths and was later repaired several times. An inscription has been preserved on the facade, recalling a 19th-century reconstruction.
Inside, attention is drawn to the wooden elements and calligraphic decoration. The mosque has a longitudinal plan, and the minaret is located on the northwestern side. During 20th-century restorations, the exterior walls were plastered, but the structure has preserved its historic character and conveys well the appearance of old Ankara.
For tourists, Zincirli Mosque is of interest as a शांत and relatively little-known monument near other historic sites in Ulus. It is easy to include in a walk through the old center to better understand what urban religious architecture looked like during the Ottoman period.

Architecture and Interior of Zincirli Mosque
A place to explore Ottoman urban religious architecture.
17th-century Ottoman mosque in the historic Ulus quarter
Visitors come here primarily for the building itself and its details. Outside, you can observe the combination of stone and brick masonry, the compact volume of the building, and the minaret adjoining the northwestern side. There are three windows on the northern facade, and the roof is covered with tiles, emphasizing the traditional character of the structure.
The interior space is simple and restrained, without the large decorative programs typical of major imperial mosques. Of particular interest are the wooden parts of the interior and the calligraphic decoration. The women's gallery is located on the upper level, and a separate entrance is situated next to the minaret.
The best way to see the mosque is during a walk through Ulus, combining the visit with other monuments of old Ankara. Nearby are Ankara Castle, the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations, and the district's historic streets, so a stop at the mosque usually becomes part of a broader route through the city center.
The easiest way to get here is on foot from the Ulus Square area or by public transport to the central part of old Ankara. Before visiting, it is worth taking prayer times into account and observing the usual rules for visiting active mosques.
