Alanya Fortress

Alanya Fortress in Alanya, Turkey

Alanya Fortress is located on a high rocky peninsula above the center of Alanya and occupies a prominent place in the cityscape. It is clearly visible from the port, the promenade, and the beaches, while the site itself brings together defensive walls, towers, gates, inner courtyards, and sections of old buildings. The main appearance of the complex is associated with the 13th-century Seljuk period, although fortifications on this cape existed in even earlier eras.

The historical significance of the fortress is directly connected to its location. From the top of the peninsula, the harbor, sea approaches, and the coastal part of the city were controlled, so the fortification system stretched down the slopes to the sea and linked the upper part with the lower defensive structures. The site preserves water cisterns, ruins of residential and utility buildings, religious monuments, and fragments of the layout that help to imagine the structure of the medieval settlement.

For tourists, the fortress is interesting not only for its architecture but also for the opportunity to see Alanya from different elevations. The viewpoints offer views of the port, the Red Tower, Cleopatra Beach, city districts, and the Mediterranean coast. The site is convenient for walking, combining the exploration of walls and historical monuments with stops at observation points.

A visit to the fortress is often included in a route through the historical part of Alanya. It can be complemented by a walk to the Red Tower and the old Tersane shipyard at the foot of the peninsula, as well as a visit to the Alanya Archaeological Museum near Cleopatra Beach. The historical center of Alanya, including the fortress, is included on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List.

Walls, towers, and panoramas above the port and Cleopatra Beach

During a walk through the fortress, visitors pass through different levels of fortifications: from the outer walls on the slopes to the more protected upper part of the peninsula. Here you can see sections of massive stone masonry, old gates, towers, remains of cisterns, and fragments of residential buildings. The site also features monuments from different eras, which makes the visit interesting not only from the point of view of the views, but also as an introduction to the layered history of Alanya.

The route through the fortress usually follows paved streets and sections with noticeable changes in elevation, so it is worth allowing enough time for the walk. At the highest points, it is convenient to stop at the viewing platforms: from there, the bay, the port area, the Red Tower, the line of Cleopatra Beach, and the modern center of Alanya are clearly visible. In some parts of the fortress, a residential environment has been preserved, so the walk passes not only among ruins, but also along historical streets where the structure of the old settlement can still be felt.

Near the fortress are the Red Tower, the Seljuk Tersane shipyard, and the Alanya Archaeological Museum, so these places can easily be combined into one route. You can reach the fortress by road, by taxi, or by the Alanya Teleferik cable car from the area near Cleopatra Beach.
