Old Town Walls
Old Town Walls in Alanya, Turkey
The Old Town Walls in Alanya run along the slopes of the rocky peninsula above the sea and remain one of the main historical features of the city's skyline. They are part of the Alanya Fortress system and are clearly visible from the port, the waterfront, and the center of Alanya. Inside this line of fortifications, the old part of the city has been preserved, with winding streets, stone-built areas, and access to viewpoints.
The history of the fortifications is linked to an earlier settlement on the site of ancient Coracesium, but the main appearance of the surviving walls dates to the Seljuk period. In the 13th century, Alanya became an important fortified port, and the defensive system was adapted to the peninsula's terrain - with ascents, steep slopes, and natural protection from the sea. Later, individual sections were rebuilt and repaired, so the masonry and condition of the walls differ noticeably along various stretches.
The overall line of the fortress fortifications extends for about 6.5 km. Along the route, you can see towers, gates, sections of massive stone walls, and defensive lines that follow the shape of the rocky shoreline. For tourists, this is not a separate short attraction, but part of a large walking area where both the walls themselves and the views of the harbor, the coast, Cleopatra Beach, and the mountains are of interest. Exploring the walls is usually combined with a visit to the fortress, the Red Tower, and the old shipyard.

Medieval fortifications on the slopes of the peninsula above the sea
During a walk along the walls, you can observe how the city's defenses were built into the complex terrain. Some sections run along the ridge of the slope, others rise in steps, and in places the stone line almost merges with the rock. The best-preserved fragments allow you to see the height of the masonry, the shape of the towers, and the location of the passages through which access to the fortified part of the city was controlled.
The route is interesting not only for its architecture, but also for its viewpoints. From the upper sections, there are views of Alanya Port, the Red Tower, the Mediterranean coast, and the city center, while from some paths it is easy to see how the fortifications connect the lower port area with the upper fortress zone. For a comfortable walk, it is worth choosing suitable footwear, as the roads here are steep, paved, or uneven in places.
Nearby are Alanya Fortress, the Red Tower, the Tersane Shipyard, and viewpoints above the harbor. You can reach the walls on foot from the center of Alanya through the streets of the old town, or travel closer to the upper part of the fortress by transport and then continue exploring on foot.
