Kizil Kule Tower
Kizil Kule Tower in Alanya, Turkey
Kizil Kule Tower is located in the center of Alanya, at the entrance to the port on the Mediterranean coast. It is one of the city's most famous historical structures and a prominent landmark on the waterfront. The name translates from Turkish as "Red Tower" and is associated with the reddish hue of the brick used in the upper part of the building.
The tower was built in the 13th century during the Seljuk period as part of the fortifications protecting the harbor and shipyard. It was an important defensive point on the city's seaward side and formed part of the overall line of fortress walls rising toward the castle on the rock. Thanks to its location by the water, Kizil Kule controlled the approaches to the port and played a significant role in the defense of Alanya.
The structure has an octagonal shape and massive walls made of stone and brick. Inside, elements of medieval military architecture have been preserved, and the construction itself clearly shows how coastal fortifications of that time were designed. Today, the tower is perceived not only as a monument of defensive architecture, but also as a vivid part of Alanya's historical appearance.
For tourists, Kizil Kule is interesting for its combination of architecture, history, and views of the port area of the city. A visit to the tower can easily be combined with a walk through the center of Alanya, along the harbor, and to the old shipyard. It is one of those places where it is easier to understand how a medieval city on the coast was organized.

Inside the tower, museum spaces are usually open, dedicated to the history of the city, the Seljuk period, and the development of the local coastline. During your visit, you can see the internal structure of the building, walk through the levels of the tower, and notice the narrow passages, loopholes, and thick walls designed for defense. The interior does not resemble a palace or a classic museum hall - here, the building itself remains the main exhibit.
From the upper levels, there are views of Alanya Port, excursion boats, the central waterfront, and part of the fortress walls stretching toward the slope. From here, it is easy to see how the tower was connected to the sea and why its position had strategic importance. It is best to allow time not only for the interior visit, but also for walking around the tower outside to examine the masonry and the shape of the structure.
Nearby are the Seljuk Tersane shipyard, the port area, the lower sections of the fortress walls, and the beginning of the ascent to Alanya Castle. This makes the area convenient for a walking route through the historic part of the city center, especially if you want to see several medieval monuments in one visit.
The easiest way to get here is on foot from the central part of Alanya and from the port promenade. If you are coming from other districts of the city, it is usually convenient to take public transport or a taxi to the harbor and then walk a few minutes to the tower.
