Ancient City of Heraclea

Ancient City of Heraclea

Ancient City of Heraclea in the Milas District, Turkey

The ancient city of Heraclea by Latmus is located in the Milas district, near the village of Kapikiri, on the shore of Lake Bafa. In antiquity, this place stood on a sea gulf, but over time the coastline changed and the gulf turned into a lake. Today, the ruins of the ancient city stand among a rocky landscape and olive groves, making the area especially striking for walking and sightseeing.

Heraclea arose on the site of the earlier Carian settlement of Latmos and received its new name in the Hellenistic period. The city retained its importance in antiquity, and the surrounding area was also used in Byzantine times. Thanks to this, visitors can see not just a single monument here, but an entire historical landscape where traces of different eras stand very close to one another.

Among the most notable remains are sections of the city walls, towers, defensive structures, and the ruins of the Temple of Athena. Rock-cut tombs and other archaeological objects can also be found in the surrounding area. The site is also connected with the ancient tradition of Endymion, and nearby there is a place associated with this myth.

Heraclea is of interest to those who want to see ancient ruins outside a large museum complex and better understand how the landscape of western Anatolia changed over time. A trip here is often combined with a visit to Lake Bafa, the Byzantine monuments on its islands, and a walk through the village of Kapikiri.

Ancient City of Heraclea

Fortification Walls, the Temple of Athena, and the Shore of Lake Bafa

Within the ancient city, the best-preserved features are the lines of fortifications built into the rocky terrain. During a walk, visitors can see fragments of walls and towers, the remains of gates, as well as the ruins of the Temple of Athena. The archaeological zone does not look like a fully developed park, so visits usually follow natural paths among stones and the old buildings of the village.

The area is valued not only for its ancient monuments, but also for the combination of ruins with the natural setting of Lake Bafa. Some points offer fine views of the water, rock formations, and islands where Byzantine monasteries and defensive structures have survived. This place is well suited to those interested in archaeology, the history of Caria, and peaceful walking routes.

Nearby are the village of Kapikiri, shoreline areas of Lake Bafa, and several Byzantine-period monuments that can be included in the same trip. The area is also known for the prehistoric rock paintings of Latmos, but visiting some locations may require a local guide.

The most convenient way to get here is from Milas by car or as part of an organized tour toward Lake Bafa and the village of Kapikiri. Before the trip, it is worth considering the heat during the warm season and choosing comfortable footwear, as the surface among the ruins is uneven.
