Ancient City of Stratonikeia

Ancient City of Stratonikeia near Milas, Turkey

The ancient city of Stratonikeia is located in the Yatagan district, northeast of Bodrum and not far from Milas, next to the village of Eskihisar in Mugla Province. The archaeological area lies by the road between Yatagan and Milas, so it is easy to include during a trip through the inland part of the region. For visitors, it is one of those places where ancient ruins are perceived not in isolation, but in connection with the later life of the settlement.

The city emerged in the Hellenistic period and developed during the Roman era, when public buildings, streets, and structures for assemblies and trade appeared here. In the following centuries, the area continued to be used, so in one place you can see traces of the ancient, Byzantine, beylik, and Ottoman periods. This multilayered character makes Stratonikeia especially interesting for those who want to understand how the urban environment changed over many centuries.

The site preserves remains of the theatre, city walls, colonnaded streets, public buildings, and parts of the old residential development. Some of the ruins stand alongside the later houses of Eskihisar, where ancient stone blocks were often incorporated into newer buildings. Because of this, a walk through the site offers an opportunity to see not only individual ruins, but also the continuity of the place's use.

Stratonikeia is well suited to travellers interested in archaeology, ancient history, and lesser-known monuments of southwestern Turkey. A visit usually takes place on foot across an open area, where the layout of the ancient city is clearly visible and traces of different eras can be seen. It is a peaceful place for a thoughtful visit, especially if combined with a trip around the surroundings of Milas and the inland districts of Mugla Province.

Ruins of an ancient city among the historic buildings of Eskihisar

During a visit, you can see fragments of the theatre, sections of monumental streets, columns, stone blocks with inscriptions, and the remains of public buildings. In different parts of the site, it is clearly visible how ancient elements were reused in later times. It is precisely this combination of an archaeological zone and the old settlement nearby that distinguishes Stratonikeia from many other ancient cities in the region.

It is best to plan the visit as a leisurely walk through a large open area. It is advisable to wear comfortable shoes and bring water and sun protection, as a significant part of the route passes through areas without shade. Those interested in history in more detail should pay attention to the construction details, paving fragments, and the differences between the ancient and Ottoman layers of development.

Other historic sites of Mugla Province are located not far from here, and on the way from Milas you can also include other archaeological monuments of the inland part of the region in your route. Visitors usually arrive here by car from Yatagan or Milas, since the ruins are located next to the road and are easy to find by the signs for Eskihisar and Stratonikeia.

This place is especially interesting for those who prefer not a museum format, but exploring a monument in its natural setting. Here you can calmly examine the layout of the ancient city, trace changes in architecture from different periods, and see how the archaeological site is connected with the real history of settlement on the same territory.
