Ancient City of Iasos
Ancient City of Iasos in Milas, Turkey - archaeological zone by Gulluk Bay
The Ancient City of Iasos is located on the shore of Gulluk Bay, near Milas, north of Bodrum. In antiquity, it was a coastal city of Caria, initially situated on a small island and later connected to the mainland. Its location by the sea largely shaped its development: Iasos was associated with fishing, maritime trade, and crafts.
Archaeological evidence shows that people lived here already in very ancient times, long before the classical era. Later, the city became part of the Greek cultural sphere and then experienced periods of Persian, Hellenistic, and Roman influence. Thanks to this, traces of different stages of history have been preserved on the site, which can be traced through the layout and character of the buildings.
Today, Iasos is an open-air archaeological zone where the remains of defensive walls, public buildings, residential quarters, a theater, an agora, and an aqueduct can be seen. Roman sarcophagi and fragments of urban infrastructure are also found here, allowing visitors to imagine the structure of an ancient settlement. The site is interesting for those who want to see not a single monument, but an entire historical landscape on the seashore.
A trip to Iasos attracts visitors not only with its ancient ruins, but also with the surrounding natural environment of Gulluk Bay. The coastal waters and shallows are known for their biodiversity, and waterfowl can be observed in the surrounding area. Therefore, a visit to the ancient city can easily be combined with a leisurely walk and an introduction to the coastline of this region.

Ancient City of Iasos - layout, buildings, and coastal relief
A walk through the ruins reveals the city’s connection with the sea and its historical layers.
Ruins of an ancient port on the shore of Gulluk Bay
At Iasos, visitors can walk along sections of ancient streets and explore the remains of the city walls, theater, and public spaces. The city layout is quite clearly readable: the areas where residential quarters, utility buildings, and places of public life were located are noticeable. The visit is especially interesting because the ruins stand right by the water, and the city’s connection with the sea is felt very vividly here.
During the walk, it is worth paying attention to the preserved stone structures, fragments of the aqueduct, and Roman-period sarcophagi. At the archaeological excavation site, visitors can see how the city changed over the centuries and how ancient structures were integrated into the coastal relief. It is best to choose comfortable shoes for the visit, as the surface is uneven and stony in places, and there is little shade in the open areas.
Iasos is suitable for a calm independent visit, photography, and знакомства with the ancient history of Caria away from the main tourist routes. Nearby are Gulluk Bay, the village of Gulluk, and the surroundings of Milas, which can be visited after exploring the archaeological zone. People usually get here by car from Milas or from the Bodrum side along the road toward Gulluk Bay.
