Ancient City of Limyra
Ancient City of Limyra in Finike, Turkey
The ancient city of Limyra is located near Finike, in the southern part of Antalya Province, next to the modern settlement of Zengerler. It is one of the notable archaeological sites of ancient Lycia, interesting for the fact that traces of several historical periods have been preserved on its territory. Limyra is especially associated with the flourishing period of Lycia in the 4th century BC, when the city played an important role in the life of the region.
Today, you can see the ruins of an ancient theater, sections of city walls, rock-cut tombs, sarcophagi, and the remains of public and residential buildings. Among the most famous monuments is the Heroon of Pericles of Lycia, a monumental funerary structure usually considered one of the important examples of Lycian architecture. Traces of later Roman and Byzantine rebuilding are also visible on the site.
Limyra is interesting not only for its individual structures, but also for the overall layout of the ancient city. Here, you can trace how the development changed from the Lycian and Hellenistic periods to the Roman and Byzantine periods. For tourists, this place is suitable for those who want to see a lesser-known but substantial archaeological site away from the busiest routes of the coast.

The Ancient City of Limyra and Its Monuments Across Different Periods
The theater, tombs, and traces of Roman and Byzantine rebuilding have been preserved here.
Theater, Heroon, and Necropolises of Ancient Lycia
A visit to Limyra usually begins in the central part, where the ruins of the theater and fragments of the urban development have been preserved. On the slopes and along the edges of the ancient settlement are necropolises with rock-cut burials and stone sarcophagi. The terrain helps to understand the structure of the city: public areas were located lower down, while the fortifications and some of the funerary monuments stood higher up the slopes.
Particular attention is drawn to the Heroon of Pericles of Lycia, associated with one of the most famous rulers of Lycia. In addition to it, the site contains the remains of a Byzantine church, sections of defensive walls, and other fragments of buildings dating from different periods. It is best to come in comfortable footwear, as the visit takes place across an uneven archaeological site.
Nearby are Finike and other Lycian monuments that can be included in a single trip along this section of the coast. Limyra is usually reached by car from Finike in a short time, heading toward the Zengerler area.
