Phaselis Ruins

Phaselis Ruins in Kemer, Turkey

The Phaselis Ruins are located on the coast near Kemer, within the Beydaglari National Park. This is an archaeological area on the site of an ancient city founded, according to the generally accepted version, in the 7th century BC. Today, people come here to combine a walk among ancient remains with relaxation by the sea and in the pine forest.

Fragments of the main street, sections of the agora, theater, baths, aqueduct, and necropolis have been preserved on the site. The ruins are located in the open air, without dense urban development around them, so the layout of the ancient settlement is quite easy to understand. During a visit, it is important to follow the monument protection rules: do not climb on the walls, do not move stones, and do not touch archaeological elements.

In different periods, Phaselis was connected with maritime trade and was among the important coastal cities of the region. Its history reflects the Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine periods, so the site is interesting not only as a walking area but also as a monument to the layered past of Turkey's southern coast.

For tourists, Phaselis is convenient because in a single trip you can see ancient ruins, pine-covered areas of the park, and small bays by the sea. People usually come here for a few hours: to walk around the site, see the main structures, and then relax on the shore. In spring, swimming is already possible, but the water in April and early May often remains cool.

A visit to the site usually begins with the ancient city street that ran through the central part of the settlement toward the port areas. Along the way, you can see the remains of public buildings, building foundations, and sections of engineering structures. The theater has been partially preserved, but its shape makes it easy to imagine the layout of a small ancient urban space.

The route through Phaselis passes through shaded sections of pine forest and open excavation areas, so comfortable shoes and water are especially useful in warm weather. The sea is very close, and after exploring the site many people head to one of the bays, where they can sit by the shore or go for a swim. It is better not to sit on or climb onto stones and ancient fragments so as not to damage the monument.

Those interested in history should pay attention to the city's location between the sea and forested slopes: it clearly explains its former role as a coastal port. Other places along the Kemer coast are also nearby, including beaches and natural areas of the national park, which can be combined with this trip in one day.

The ruins are usually reached from Kemer by car, taxi, or as part of a coastal excursion. An independent visit is convenient because you can calmly walk through the entire site at your own pace and stay by the sea after the tour.
