Ancient City of Rhodiapolis
Ancient City of Rhodiapolis in Kumluca, Turkey
The ancient city of Rhodiapolis is located near Kumluca, in the Kemer area of southern Turkey, on a height above a fertile valley. It is one of the small Lycian cities that later continued to develop during the Roman period. Today, visitors come here for the archaeological remains and the open views of the surrounding area.
The site is relatively compact, so it is convenient to explore on foot. On the slope and at the top of the hill, the ruins of a theater, sections of public buildings, cisterns, remains of residential structures, and other urban features have been preserved. The layout helps visitors imagine how a small ancient city away from the seacoast was organized.
Rhodiapolis is especially known for finds associated with Opramoas, a wealthy resident and benefactor whose inscriptions provide important information about the life of the city during the Roman period. Thanks to these epigraphic monuments, archaeologists better understand local self-government, public spending, and the city's connections with other centers of Lycia.
This place is suitable for those interested in ancient history who want to see an archaeological site that is less crowded than the major coastal ruins. A visit usually does not take too much time, so it is easy to combine with other places around Kumluca.

Ancient City of Rhodiapolis - theater, inscriptions, and valley views
The visit takes little time and helps you understand the structure of a Lycian city.
Theater, Inscriptions of Opramoas, and a View of the Kumluca Valley
During a walk through Rhodiapolis, visitors can see the semicircle of the ancient theater, fragments of streets and terraces, the foundations of public buildings, and elements of the water supply system. Some of the ruins are located on an uneven slope, so it is best to choose comfortable footwear and keep in mind that the paths may be rocky.
The inscriptions associated with Opramoas are of particular interest. They are what made Rhodiapolis notable to historians: from these texts, it was possible to learn about donations for the restoration of the region's cities after destruction and about the role of the local elite in public life. Even without deep knowledge of ancient history, this gives the site a clear human dimension.
From the upper parts of the archaeological zone, there is a wide view over the agricultural lands and modern development of the valley. Nearby are the ancient city of Olympos and the Chimera flames, and toward the coast, the trip can be combined with a visit to the beaches in the Kumluca area.
The easiest way to get here is by car from Kumluca or from the resort area of Kemer, followed by a short ascent to the excavation site. A brief walk is usually enough for the visit, but during hot hours it is best to bring water and a hat.
