Ankara Castle

Ankara Castle in Ankara, Turkey

Ankara Castle stands on a high hill in the old part of the city, not far from the center of Ankara. It is one of the most prominent historic structures in the capital: from its walls there are fine views of the old city quarters and the modern districts spreading below along the slopes. The fortress is connected with Ankara’s centuries-old history and helps illustrate how the city developed from the ancient period to Ottoman times.

The exact date of the castle’s foundation is unknown. Fortifications existed on this site in ancient times, and its present appearance took shape gradually during the Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk, and Ottoman periods. This layered origin is visible in the masonry of the walls and the overall structure of the complex, which was repeatedly rebuilt and repaired.

The castle consists of outer and inner fortifications, and its walls are reinforced with towers and adapted to the terrain of the hill. Inside the fortress and around it, an old urban quarter with narrow streets, traditional houses, small workshops, and shops has been preserved. Because of this, a visit to the castle is usually interesting not only as a tour of a defensive structure, but also as a walk through the historic part of Ankara.

Today, Ankara Castle remains one of the city’s key attractions for those who want to see old Ankara beyond the business and administrative districts. People come here for the panoramic views, the preserved walls, and the atmosphere of the old quarter, where the city’s history is felt especially vividly.

Fortress walls, towers, and a panorama of old Ankara

When visiting the fortress, it is worth paying attention to the massive stone walls, towers, and passages between the outer and inner lines of fortification. Part of the masonry includes fragments of earlier structures, which is characteristic of ancient and medieval fortresses in Asia Minor. From the upper sections, broad views of Ankara open up, so a walk on the castle hill is often combined with enjoying the city panoramas.

Inside and at the foot of the castle lies a historic district with traditional urban development. Here you can walk along narrow streets, see old Ankara houses, small craft and souvenir shops, and also stop at cafes with views over the city. A visit is usually done on foot, as many sections of the streets are steep and paved with stone.

Nearby are the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations and the Haci Bayram Mosque, so a visit to the castle is easy to include in a walk through Ankara’s historic center. You can get here by taxi, bus, or on foot from the central districts if you are ready for the climb up the hill.
