Antalya Clock Tower

Antalya Clock Tower, Antalya, Turkey

The Antalya Clock Tower, or Saat Kulesi, stands on Kalekapisi Square at the entrance to the historic Kaleici district, in the very center of Antalya. It is one of the main landmarks of the Old Town and a prominent point in the city's skyline.

Built at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and completed in 1901, the tower was erected to mark the 25th anniversary of Sultan Abdulhamid II's accession to the throne, following the Ottoman tradition of placing clock towers on central squares.

The structure has two tiers: the lower tier is a massive polygonal bastion of roughly hewn stone, connected to the line of the old fortification walls; the upper tier is smaller, square, and houses the clock mechanism. The height is about 14 m. The tower originally had a dome, later removed; today its silhouette is finished with battlements, emphasizing its link to the fortifications. The clock is functional and clearly visible from the square and surrounding streets.

Antalya Clock Tower

The clock on Kalekapisi Square - the entrance to the Old City

The tower stands by the former castle gates, where Ataturk Boulevard and the narrow streets of Kaleici begin. It's a convenient meeting point, a place for first photos and to study details: the four clock faces and the difference in stonework between the lower bastion and the upper tier. The interior spaces are usually closed to visitors; viewing is possible from outside.

The best shots are in the morning and near sunset, when the light is softer and there are fewer people on the square; in the evening the tower is lit. Good angles are from the tram tracks along Ataturk Boulevard and from the platform by the Tekeli Mehmet Pasha Mosque.

Within a few minutes' walk are the Yivli Minaret with its madrasa, the Tekeli Mehmet Pasha Mosque and Hadrian's Gate - these can be combined into a short route through Antalya's historic center.

Getting there is easy: take the nostalgic tram to the Kalekapisi stop or the modern tram to Ismetpasa station, then walk about 5 minutes.
