Hidirlik Tower

Hidirlik Tower in Kaleici Old Town, Antalya, Turkey

Hidirlik Tower is located on the southern edge of Antalya's Old Town, by Karaalioglu Park, on a high rocky shore above the sea. It is one of the notable ancient monuments in central Antalya, near the old harbor and the walking streets of Kaleici. Thanks to its location, the tower fits well into a route through the historic part of the city.

The structure is generally dated to the 2nd century AD and associated with the Roman period. The tower is built from large stone blocks and stands out for its unusual shape: it has a square base and a cylindrical upper section. Its height is about 14 meters, and the original top section has not survived.

The tower's exact purpose has not been fully established. It is considered a watchtower, a possible lighthouse, or a commemorative structure, and a connection with a funerary function is also sometimes mentioned. In later periods, the building was used in the coastal observation and defense system, which is understandable given its advantageous position above the sea.

Today, Hidirlik Tower is of interest primarily as a historical landmark and a viewpoint near Kaleici. From the outside, visitors can examine the masonry and the overall structure of the monument, and the surrounding area offers views of the coastline, the sea, and the old harbor district. It is a convenient stop during a walk through central Antalya and Karaalioglu Park.

The tower is usually viewed from the outside: the massive base, large stone blocks, and the transition from the square lower part to the round upper section are best seen. Visitors are generally not allowed inside, so the main focus is on the architecture of the monument itself and its position on the edge of the high shore.

Nearby, there are walking paths and viewing platforms in Karaalioglu Park. From here, you can look out over the cliffs, the coastal strip, and the Mediterranean Sea, as well as toward the old harbor. In clear weather, this is one of the convenient places for a short stop during a walking route through the historic center.

Nearby are the streets of Kaleici, Hadrian's Gate, the old harbor, and city viewpoints, so a visit to the tower can easily be combined with a walk through the Old Town. People usually come here on foot from central Antalya through Kaleici or from the side of Karaalioglu Park.

Before visiting, it is worth bearing in mind that access to the surrounding area may change due to improvement works or restoration. No special preparation is required for a visit, but on the coastal section and stone paths, it is more convenient to wear shoes with non-slip soles.
