Ark City Citadel
Ark City Citadel in Bukhara, Uzbekistan
The Ark City Citadel is located in the northwestern part of the historic center of Bukhara. It is an ancient fortress that for centuries served as the residence of Bukhara's rulers and an important administrative hub of the city. The Ark is among Bukhara's most famous landmarks and helps to understand how power and urban life were organized in the medieval and later history of the region.
The citadel stands on a high artificial hill and has the shape of an irregular rectangle. Its massive walls and distinctive main entrance with two towers are easily recognizable and are considered one of the architectural dominants of old Bukhara. The inner buildings that have survived to the present day mainly date from the 17th to the early 20th century, although the fortress itself is much older in origin.
On the territory of the Ark, mosques, ceremonial and service premises, sections of the palace complex, and other structures connected with the daily and official life of the citadel have been preserved or partially restored. Local traditions are associated with this place, including the legend of Siyavush, although not all details found in later tradition are confirmed by historical sources.
Today, the Ark is part of the Bukhara State Museum-Reserve and is part of the historic center of Bukhara, which is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. For tourists, it is a convenient starting point for getting acquainted with the city's history, its fortification architecture, and the layout of the former government residence.

The rulers' fortress with gates, mosques, and palace halls
A visit to the Ark usually begins at the main entrance, designed with two massive towers and a sloping approach to the gate. Even from the outside, the powerful defensive walls are clearly visible, and inside you can walk through the grounds of the former citadel, where official halls, religious buildings, and utility courtyards were located. The museum exhibitions help visitors imagine how these spaces were used in different periods.
On the grounds, you can see the Jome congregational mosque, the Khonako mosque, the throne hall, and other preserved parts of the complex. Not only the individual buildings are of interest, but also the layout of the citadel itself, showing how the ceremonial, residential, and service zones were divided. From the elevated areas, there are views of Bukhara's historic buildings.
The Ark can easily be combined with a walk through the old city: nearby are Bukhara's Registan Square, the Bolo Hauz Mosque, and the Poi Kalyan ensemble. Thanks to its location in the historic center of Bukhara, the citadel is usually easy to reach on foot from many other landmarks of the old city or by taxi from modern districts.
