Throne Courtyard of the Ark Fortress

Throne Courtyard of the Ark Fortress in Bukhara, Uzbekistan

The Throne Courtyard of the Ark Fortress is located inside Bukhara's main citadel, in the historic center of the city. It is one of the ceremonial sections of the Ark, associated with the official life of the court of Bukhara's rulers. Formal receptions, state ceremonies and, by tradition, important acts of power, including the accession of the ruler to the throne, took place here.

The main feature of the courtyard is a marble throne created in the 17th century by craftsmen from Nurata. Above the throne was a painted wooden canopy supported by marble columns. Even in its current state, this space helps visitors imagine how the ceremonial part of the emir's residence was arranged and how much importance was given to official ritual.

Service premises of the citadel were located next to the courtyard. According to historical records, the treasury was nearby, where locally minted coins and jewels belonging to the emirs of Bukhara were kept. This emphasizes that the Throne Courtyard was not only a place for ceremonies, but also part of a complex administrative and court ensemble.

For tourists, the Throne Courtyard is interesting as one of the most illustrative parts of the Ark Fortress, where the history of the Emirate of Bukhara is especially clearly perceived. A visit to this section is usually combined with a walk through the entire citadel and a visit to other monuments of old Bukhara located nearby.

Ceremonial space for the rulers of Bukhara

During a visit to the Throne Courtyard, attention is usually focused on the open layout of this section and on the marble throne, which served as the center of official ceremonies. Here it is easier to understand how the residential, administrative and ceremonial zones were divided within the Ark Fortress, and what role ritual played in the life of the ruler's residence.

Visitors can examine the architectural details associated with the design of the courtyard: the stone finish, the layout of the platform and the place where the canopy above the throne once stood. Even if the decorative elements have not been fully preserved, the composition of the space itself gives an idea of the status of this part of the citadel and of how court ceremonies were organized.

A visit to the Throne Courtyard is usually included in a tour of the Ark Fortress as a museum and historical complex. Nearby are Registan Square, the Bolo Hauz Mosque and other monuments of Bukhara's historic center, so this site can easily be included in a walking route through the old city.

The easiest way to get here is on foot or by taxi to the Ark Fortress, located in the center of Bukhara. On the grounds, it is worth keeping in mind the uneven surface and open areas without shade, especially during the hot season.
